I live in New York where the fuel taxes are very high. Can anyone tell me if the on road taxed fuel currently 1.65 a gallon is any different then the dyed red off road fuel that is about $1.00 a gallon. I know that the new constuction equipment diesels are getting hit with similar emmission standards as the on road trucks are but I'm not sure if the dyed fuel is any different.

Welcome aboard CUMMINSBILL.
Dyed fuel is for farm use. If you get caught with it off the farm, you will pay some hefty fines.

 

If you use the "red" fuel enough times, you may break even when you get hit with the $1,000.00 fine for running off road fuel, but probably not. Its not worth the risk, especially while you're under warranty.

you asked if it was any different. depending on your part of the country and the fuel supplier more than likely its just normal pump grade #2 with red dye added it costs to much and is too much of a hassle for most fuel wholesaliers to keep both high and low sulfer so they just add red dye to low sulfer (the same as what you normally buy for your truck). now whether you chose to use it or not is up to you

 

Ok thanks for all the quick replies. I'm not concerned with getting caught with the red fuel not that it can't happen I just know alot of guys runing it without getting caught. I am concerned with ruining my rig. Will fuel with a high sulfur content ruin anything or will it just produce more emmissions?

 

more than likely it won't be high sulfer but even if it is it won't hurt your truck

 

In contrast to what Helicopter Dan.. I know here in VA the fuel is dyed when it leaves the terminal (exxon/chevron/shell etc - they majors) (im also reading is that you mean 'supplier' to be the local oil company) and i think it is an IRS requirement that untaxed fuel has to be dyed when it leaves the terminal.. VA is a tax at the rack state, which means we collect the tax when it leaves the terminal - which also means it better be dyed when it leaves the terminal if it is untaxed. The only exceptions are if a whole tanker load is pulled on an exempt card for exclusive use by a state/local/federal government entity.

Again atleast here in VA - highway fuel is low sulfur and the off road/dyed/heating oil (allt he same stuff) is high sulfur - per EPA requirements that low sulfur fuel has to be used in highway vehicles.

There is a little cited fine of someting like $10,000 that the EPA can fine you for using high sulfur fuel in a vehicle manufactured for highway use.

I dont know if this has been posted yet but the newer diesel's like 2000 or newer dont really like red diesel. Someone told me that the injectors get screwed up along with a couple other things. But he might have been lie'n. ???

 

Dyed offroad diesel comes in two forms, low sulfur(like normal on road #2), and high sulfur offroad. Be sure if you are going to run the stuff it's the low sulfur. Otherwise it's the exact same fuel, with dye. Highly advise against running it though unless you are truly offroad. While the chances of getting checked are low, it's not worth the big penalties if you DO get caught.

 

That Guy like I stated in my first post the slufer content (high or low) depends on your local supplier, where I get mine the only thing I can get is low sulfer to get untaxed (dyed) fuel the supplier just adds dye and doesn't tax it. Also, something else for people to try, if I buy fuel in 1000 gal quanities the supplier gives me the option of adding dye. below 1000 gallons he has to add dye( no idea why this is)

 

Well I don't know what dye you use on your side of the pond.
An experiment that would show if they were similar (out of scientific curiosity) would be to take a quart of dyed fuel, put it in a jar and "wash" it by applying a solution of household soap in water to the fuel, shake vigurously and let it settle. If this removes the dye, you have the same dye as we have.
This would remove the colour element of the dye, but not the traces of other chemicals that are used to "mark" offroad fuel over here. I can't comment on the US laws about using this stuff because I live in Austria. Over here it's like that: If you get caught with heating oil/offroad fuel that is dyed you get fined heavily. If they find out that you have removed the dye from the fuel the fines get much higher (about 15 times higher), and if they find out that you have bought offroad, dedyed and sold as onroad.... watch out!
