Question Detroit 6v53

Anyone knowledgeable on this motor? More specifically the fuel racks and how to fix/adjust them if they're possibly locked wide open?

I have done some of the 8v72/92's. If they ae the same its not to bad, I guess it really depends on your definition of "bad". I think you need to start on one side and hook up the linkage, then set each injector so the cup on the end of the rod moves with a litte drag, working your way from the back to the front. Then you hook up the other side of the linkage and repeat. If I was looking at it I am sure I could figure it out, but I haven't touched one since I was in tech school and that was a few years ago. I would do a google seach so you know you do it right. BTW if the injectors are locked open you may need to take them out and clean them, it could be just the linkage, but if you get it running that may be enough to loosen them up. Just keep somthing to shut off the air close by.

I hear you on the something to block it off.

We're gonna have to go threw it carefully before we start this motor up again as it was sucking a 6"x6" block against the intake when we decided 2500+ rpms and it wasnt coming down was getting a little bad.

Luckily the kill switch on the governor is easy to access and we got luckly that it shut itself down after a few wiggles.

Still looking on google, but not finding much help, just people saying how bad the situation sucks; but no fixes.

Did you loosen all the injectors and make sure they are all moving? Do youhave the valve covers off when it is running so yu can see what is or isn't moving? If one sticks it will cause the rest of the injectors to stick also and full fuel until you get it to shut down. I think I have a right up on how to adjust the inj. on a 72/92 (I think they are all the same) I will try to findit and post it up Monday night. I know they like to run away, I had a 8v92 take off on me in school, it was on a stand and outisde the shop, but it sure did sound nice right before I got the turbo blocked off and it shut down.

On this motor the starter would turn it but wasnt getting any fuel. So we bled from the tank to the filters, filter to pump, and then removed the valve covers and bled the lines to the injectors. The injectors were moving and working freely and the fuel racks were moving a shade, but we dont know how much movement there should or shouldnt be in the racks. What's wide open, what isnt. So on and so forth.

It cooked off under it's own fuel and power, idled at about 800 rpms. Then it revved straight to 2500 and held there until I jumped in the compartment and threw switches while a buddy blocked the intake and another friend threw the kill switch.

It was quite exciting especially whne there's only sheet metal separating you from that winding motor in the driver's compartment.

When the motor is not running the fuel rack is in WOT. Once it starts the gov, will pull the rack out and the motor will idle. I would take the thottle linkage off right at the box on the front of the motor, then fire it up again, see what it does making sure to keep a close eye one the rack movements. I didn't grab my cheat sheet from work, but will try and bring it home tommarrow. Let me know if it does the same thing.

I was talking to a buddy and he mentioned that the governor on start up probably reverts to wide open throttle on start up/shut off and then adjusts for normal idle.

Im thinking since the motor never passed the high rpm governor setting, it may be the governor locked open?

Unfortunately, Im in the Dallas area and the vehicle is in Houston. May be a couple weeks before I an look at it again. I did pull the top plate of the governor housing off, it looked virtually new on the inside, but Im also new to these motors and it has been sitting since probably '00. So....

I appreciate all the help I can get on this matter.
