Cummins in the future
I spoke with a Cummins shop the other day, and we lamented Freightliner not offering a Cummins engine in the lineup. I searched Detroit Diesel's website, and was suprised to see a re-badged DT466E looking at me, with links to two Mercedes diesel engines. I know D-C owns DD, and they also own Freightliner/Sterling/Western Star, but what gives for the future? They were touting a small 6 cyl. inline medium truck diesel that may just fit a Dodge Ram nicely.....
I worry that since I have found a combination I really like, Dodge will once again make a mistake, this time by change engines. I see D-C switching to an MBE or DD(International) engine, dropping Cummins from the successful show we are happily members of. Ford will ****** that fruit before it hits the ground, throwing the 6.0 and 6.4's in the trash and have everything they ever wanted: Strongest engine and best selling truck.
Just voicing my fears.....

Big thing with MD is that until 06 i believe they dont have to meet the US emmission restrictions. So that helps them sell better by more power/better mileage. Detroit diesel is not internationa. As a matter of fact DC bought Detroit diesel or the way the big rigs see it Frieghtliner owns Detroit. As of now International does not offer a detroit engine in its line up. But are now comming out with big displacement engines. One thing ill be sorry to see go is the light duty diesel that cummins has been developing for DC, Im sure that in that case they will go with a MD engine. But i dont see them loosin cummins by choice any time soon. Im sure dodge knows what they have and how important it is
The D-C rep told us at the dealership the other day, that when the Cummins contract expires, it will not be renewed, and that the 5.9L cummins will be replaced with a MBZ diesel. When we asked which model or hp-ratings, he said he was not at liberty to say, but said it would be impressive.
Which means that the Cummins contract would be up for grabs, and if Ford didn't grab it, they would be stupid.
What would be smart of Dodge would be to keep the Cummins and offer a Mercedes diesel engine as options. Then that way we have a choice.

Friend of mine has been a ford mech (25+ years) working on the big and little stuff. Folks he knows for many years at ford is saying that starting in 07. DC nor ford has an engine that will pass the 07 diesel emissions test. So ford is looking at either another redesigned v8 or an inline 6. Rumor is a cat motor may end up in a ford, because cat has a diesel engine that will pass the 07 emissions test. Haven't heard what DC is going to do. No idea if the duramax will pass....

Looks like Cummins is well on their way to meeting the 2007 standard with the ISB.

Come 2007 is Cummins going to start running twins? Ford was suppose to so I heard but that again could be another rumour I've heard. I know Cat runs twins now but Cummins doesn't, not even on the ISX's. Yup Cummins is still top dawg!
