Thats because the Cat get its max torque between 12-1500 rpm.

you will find that Cummins torque is also in the range of 1200 to 1400 rpm. with the new engines set up to drag down to 1000 to 1200 rpm with a full load, teaching the truck drivers has been a problem lately with the new engine to the point that we have classes in some of the big fleets to train drivers how to drive with the new torque engines like the ISM and ISX. as for cost , use to be the CAT was most expensive. in the last ten years the Cummins has been the most costly in parts to parts comparison. dont know if that is a good thing.

My Dad has grown up around Cummins all his life and Detroit. At work his Kenworth Which had a CUMMINS in it had 1 million 600 thousand before it needed the motor worked on. He has nothing good to say about detroit motors, except for the fact that if you want a truck to fall on its face halfway up a hill, get a detroit

Don't know much about them myself but my neighbor, a Ford guy, thinks a Briggs and Straton would beat them all.
