hey i work out of it. you should see how many cord's ive hauled on that beast
I love Cummins, but the 8.3 is probably the worst engine they make.
OTOH, the Series 60 is a quantum leap fwd compared to the Xv72 models and older.
I'd go series 60 in this case only.

Cummins ISL
I would go with a cummins ISL, is mounts in the same place as a 8.3, it is roughly the same size, just a little taller, but unlike the c-8.3 it offers an uverhead jake brake, as oppossed to an exhaust brake.
i think this would be a good one i think i would get the job done

Pretty big size gap between the two choices. You said your 2 choices were to be going into a medium duty truck? Its gonna have to be pretty big to house a Series 60. Remember, you have to stay within the drivetrains acceptable torque. If you dropped the 60 in a medium duty truck, it would have to take either an Allison 3k or 4k or at least a 10speed Meritor. Not too mention a beefier differential. IMHO, take a look at some other choices. If your going to be a CAT tech, take a look at some of there lineup. Might as well, since you will more than likely be getting CAT parts at cost, its not my first choice but it sure helps if you get a cut on parts. If it were me, I would stay away from the 3126/C7/C9 lineups as well as the other ACERT lineups.

Being a big cummins man i'd have to go with a detroit. The 60 series in my opinion is a good motor . But if i were building a service truck and were to put in a detroit it would be a 6v71 or a 6v92 (one of the 2 strokes) I've seen a few of those that have been through hell and back and back to hell and they still run. I worked on one that had a massive coolant leak into the crank case that ran just fine and it had a sluge in it instead of oil.
Cant say that I've had much experiance with Detroit. In our fleet of 70 school busses, they are half C-8.3, and half DT466. Both are excellent engines. Out of the two, the cummins actually seems to have more electrical problems. But then, the cummins feels stronger to me, and thats all that matters, right?

That 8.3 is a great engine - - had one in one of my diesel motorhome. Liked it better than my Cat, but the Cat was good. Also had 8.3's in one of my boats.
the only reason people get cats in their trucks is for the higher resale and because they see the cat machines out there and they think "those must be the best motors"...
From what my dad says (im not a truck driver) he preffers the cummins for drivability as he claims the detroits and cats rev up and down really slow where the cummins seems to rev faster and it lets the revs fall faster.
