I am guessing that fewer cylinders are the reason Cummins get higher mileage then V8 diesels? A friend has a Ford and get about 15 mpg on the highway. I am gettin better then 20 on average. I dont think he believes me when I tell him that.

I'm sure that's part of it. The lower rpm our engines can turn as a result of the torque is also part of it. Then, the injection system may simply be better for mileage too.

Typically, mileage gets better with lower cylinder volumes. For example, an 8L V10 (0.8L per cylinder) will get better fuel economy than an 8L V8 (1.0L per cylinder).
