Actually, I don't think they're gonna use a mercedes engine. They apparently were going to, but before anything was finalized yugo made them an offer they couldn't refuse. See, it seems yugo has not actually been defunct all this time, but has instead been working on a new generation of diesel engines. This research has been funded by the Germans, and Germany has graciously provided underground labs in which to conduct testing in secret. Official figures are still absent, but rumors have output in the 630 hp/1600 ft/lb range from a 3 cylinder variant of their engine. Other rumors speculate that there may in fact be a 9 cylinder engine of the same family under development, too. We'll just have to see.

No secret service stuff, just good old sarcasm. Not directed at you particularly, more just being silly.

why not mercedes?

Why not use an in house engine IF it will meet the requirements of the application?

If DC could use an in house engine/drivetrain wouldn't it save them $$$$ in the long run?

I know mercedes has been in the diesel business for a long time overseas...everthing from passenger cars to OTR trucks. So why not LD/MD trucks here in the US?

Don't get me wrong, I love the cummins....I just believe the bean counters are going to shoot for the most profitable option.
