A CTD would certainly fit the bill, but you may also want to consider 05 Tacoma Double cab with optional 6ft bed. Or a Tundra Double Cab. They are both nice and cheaper to buy new than a CTD. You will be happy either way. The only thing is #1(manual tranny) is out with the toyota double cabs

My 99 dually is a daily driver. I've driven 55 miles each way down to 5 miles each way today. Heat or cold it works great. I get 18-19 stop and go in town and 20 on the road except in the winter then it drops about 3-4 across the board.
Duallies are tough in the winter expecially if you only drive the rear. I just make it a point to not get in places where I might get stuck.
Tip..the truck seems to go better in reverse in the winter than forward. Why I don't know but I got out of 18 inches of snow last winter that way.
Like it was said above, others get out of my way. haha. It's amazing what people will do to stay away from my right rear.

I live out of town so my commute to the office is 80 mile round trip. I get between 21 and 22 MPG on the highway. The only problem is those 6 foot parkades

 

Nearly 100,000 miles on this commuter. 40 miles to work each way. 21 in the summer, 17-18 in the winter.

I had a 110 mile a day work commute and got 21.5-22.5 mpg with my truck. It also pulls a 11200 lb 5er and will average 12.5 mpg. All pencil figures.
The Cummins is cheaper to maintain than a PSD/DMAX with the 7500/15000 oil change schedule and nothing to do mechanicaly until 150000 mile valve check. I have 52250 miles on the truck and has saved me 3500 dollars in fuel over 8.1/V-10 gassers.
Your question will the 2500 fill the bill?? Just keep in mind the truck you want will weigh 7200-7400 lbs. Add yourself/wife 2 kids and junk in the truck, 500+ lbs, your payload is around 1100-1300 lbs. My point is if you plan on hauling heavy loads you might want to consider a 3500 SRW truck.
A 2500 will pull whatever you want but is a little short on GVWR for big loads.............JIM
