CTD 5.9 ISB & Allison
CTD 5.9 ISB & Allison
Just an observation for "discussion" -
Cummins and Allisons are "mated" in lots of applications,
but this is interesting for possible "conversions"? -
[the trans and adaptor?], and . . .??
From page 18 of the Nov. issue of Trailerlife:
"Tiffin Motorhomes has introduced a FRONT-engine diesel among
it's 2006 models, with Freightliner producing the chassis.
The 22,000 to 26,000 pound GVW chassis features a 300+ HP
5.9 liter Cummins ISB engine and an Allison 5-speed transmission".

I suspect this application would have a different cam profile, different torque curve to work with the allison trans.
Nothing new. Buddy of mine has a motorhome 5.9 ISB with an allison.

Is this the Allison from the Chevy and GMC trucks? If so, then all you'd need is the adapter?
Or would you need a ton of electronic gadgets for it too?
Rammtuff - is your friend's motorhome a Class A - non-Pusher?
Just curious, 'cause to the best of my knowledge front eng Class A
chassis (until now) are only Ferd or GM (gas) powered . . .
Seems your friend's MH [Class A or C] would have to be a Dodge.
Don't follow MH's too closely, so fill me (us) in.
Begle1 - I was wondering the same thing - same Allison as
used w/Duramax? And, oh yeah . . .the electronics ???
Superduty are you out there? Johnny 5 needs Input!

I would think that if this was a viable conversion there would be many of them done already. But who knows, maybe someday dodge will have an auto that will actually be able to put the power to the ground...

I've been looking at this for a while , I do not have a lot of info at my finger tips but some general stuff I've seen here and TDR some with pic's showing the installed Allison , most were Allison 1000 with a seperate box for electrical control, the older non computor control like the 5spd. with out overdrive also. My end result is to put less money in my stock trans. is just as good as an Allison -at least thats what the others that have gone down that road have said . I think that if I had access to a used 1000 for free to cheap then build it myself, then that would save $$ and I might go that way.
My Freightliner has an Allison 6speed behind a Cummins 5.9.
I spoke to the Fleet mechanic and asked him what it would take to put that in my truck.. His answer was a lot of sheet metal cutting... The transmission although would mate up would be to large for a pickup..
Not sure which trans is in there but it works good stays around 210 degrees no matter how big the hill is while pulling 25K to 30K without a trailer.
It also has 2 PTO's on it .. one for a compressor and 1 for the Backhoe.

Most of the Allison transmissions in Freightiner RV's and business class trucks are 2000 series and 3000 series. You will find quite a few manual 545P Allisons in the small, older, utilimaster step vans that UPS, FED EX and bread trucks use.
