Uh, ok.. $99 for a decent (but short) extension cord on a wind up reel.

I don't get it. What's the big deal?

It IS cool if you do the permanant install in the engine compartment. The pole mount model is just a glorified extension cord you can get a Sears. This way you just reel it out every night, no extension cord to fool with.
I use a 6 foot heavy duty jobber because I park right up close to a GFI on the outside of the garage. (no need for the fancy retracto-reel)

Some have tried the wind-up reels before, and found the heat generated by the high amp load of the <edit>Block heaters got captured by the windings of cord in the housing and the housing itself causing a melt-down.

Ed is right.
Most of the self retracting reels say right on them not to use unless totally unwound.
I took a chance once with one and had it meltdown, thank someone for circuit breakers!

If these are the same ones i've seen reviewed on TV, they claim it won't jam or freeze. If it's not then forget what I just said.

So that's why Ed always starts up that gas powered generator he hauls around in the back of his truck before he cranks the truck motor. I'm glad my grid heaters run off the truck batteries like rammtuff's also!

The key to keeping that from happening is to unplug the truck before you start it. That is what you should do anyway.

One trick I learned to prevent the orange or black snake chasing you down is to wrap the cord around the drivers side mirror if you can. ALMOST guaranteed not to forget it.

Pretty bad that there are so many of us that have been chased by them snakes.

Kinda like the fat gal coming out of the bathroom with her dress stuck in the back of her panty hose !!!
