Another substantial news piece is that AAM is on strike and has been since Feb 26.

Yeah I have many friends that work for GM and there is always a 2 week shutdown every summer... doesnt sound much different - guess they are just hoping it helps the finances with Chrysler since its owned by a new company now... who knows.

i think yall are misunderstanding, they are shutting down the WHOLE company. operations, finance, sales, executive departments all are not going to come to work.

normally they just close the factories.;

Much of Europe shuts down for the whole month of August. They force everyone to take their vacations at the same time, which benefits the bottom line. Chrysler seems to be doing the same thing. I'm surprised they didn't do it when it was Daimler Chrysler.

Most auto industry observers are resigned to the fact that Cerebrus is dismantling Chrysler. At the very least, Nardelli is running it into the ground.

Not only did they shut down their West Coat Pacifica design center (every carmaker has a West Coat design center), but Nardelli brought in Peter Arnell, a self-proclaimed "flamboyant" idea/ad guy. The same guy who wasted $20 million on a failed Celine Dion tie-in with Chrysler a few years ago. Unfortunately, Arnell will have unrestricted access and input to all things, including design, product planning, marketing and just about everything else.

If the company can survive Nardelli/Arnell, they may emerge from all this. But really, this company will likely be dismatled then sold off. Potentially to Carlos Ghosn / Nissan / Renault. If "Le Cost Cutter" Ghosn has his way, we'll see what's in store for Chrysler in the future. He was able to turn Nissan around, but Renault is hurting and a lot of the costs have already been driven out of Chrysler.

They didnt shut down because its not normal for American companies to just "shut down for 2 weeks"!?

Labor workers get time off.
Companies don't shut down ALL operations...that's never a good thing.

I agree with you. I do deal with one company that shuts down completely for one week twice a year. No parts, no sales, no support people. Their policy toward customers who need stuff during that period? Go suck an egg.

Historically when the auto factories shut down the line it was for retooling or re configure for another auto type. Now if they have this outage and then another for the annual retool then that is news.
