cherry picker

this fall plan on starting to do my engine drive train swap from my 91 donor ctd to my 78 ccab. been wanting to buy a cherry picker for hauling the motor out. later in life i want to build a rolling gantry type hoist . anyway alot of these i see on craigslist are 2000 lbs hoist and run 100 to 175 bucks used. are one of these good enough to hang a cummins on ? how about if the getrag and transfer case are still hanging on. don't want any suprizes and a flat pan or a flat hand. thanks for any info.

I've got a 2 ton hoist and used it to lift my engine (with transmissions and T case still attached) a few inches off the motor mounts to pull the oil pan. The hoist made some funny sounds but worked fine. I would personally feel safe with a 2 ton.

Hoists are rated at the highest capacity which is with the boom (arm) retracted all the way. As you extend the arm away from the column the capacity reduces. I would not go less than a 4000 lb. hoist. They don't call them "widow makers" for nothing.

the reason i would like to get one this week is because next weekend i need to go to my central oregon farm and reinstall a gearbox on my swather. it is under the cab with access from the front for a small cherrypicker. the gear box is only 150 lbs and i took it out by hand and exceded my max load limit. and going back in will be tougher with gravity not on my side. this box well used salvage price is 1200 bucks. i had a local great farm equipment man rebearing and seal this box because i need it back together with no leaks .its a four hour crawling on dirt job taking it out and with all the adjustments going back in is likely to take 8.

This is great advise. I have a very heavy duty engine lift and fully extended the lift cap is 1250 lbs. I wouldn't want to use a lower cap hoist than that.

think i will ad a truss rod to the top out to the end of the lift tube and use a turnbuckle and a couple of chain hooks .
