Check your oil level...

Had a little incident with my fathers truck , he had it in for a full service/check over less than a month ago.

Two days ago the transmission ceased up while he was on the highway, tranny shop pulled it down , there was less than a quart of oil left in it , about the only thing NOT ruined was the case itself. The shop that did the "check over" said , "oh , umm , we might have forgotten to check that", it was low , and filled up about a year ago , and there are no noticeable leaks under the truck, so who knows where the oil went.

So take this expensive lesson we learned , and take a minute to check ALL the oils in your truck.

Thanks for the reminder, good advice, and I hope they take care of this for you. If they let you have any of the shrapnel pieces of gears, please let me know, I'd be interested in studying them (PM me in that case - thanks).

Just changed my engine and tranny oil this past week. With a few leaks around my motor, I have to keep an eye on the dipstick.

NV4500 , 5 speed, it only holds 4-5 quarts IIRC. I checked in the garage where the truck is always parked , and the driveway infront of the garage , not one drop of oil on the concrete. I look under my truck , and his, and every other vehicle in the yard when I walk past, just to look for oil leaks.

No one knows where the oil went, but we know it wasn't checked a few weeks ago when it should have been.

Maybe they drained the oil rather than checking it? Do these trannys have a drain and fill plug that they could have opened the wrong plug? They probably thought it was over filled?

Sorry for the trouble.. Jeff

Question, I've read the post where the guys their 5600 trans to the top (up past the fill plug) is this necessary also on the 4500's.

And the reply on the 4wd transfer case/ trans. is true, my chev. did that a few years back, the seal went out between the trans and transfer case and all the oil went from the tranny to the transfer, ------burned it smooth up.

oh that makes more sense
the shop drained it and forgot to fill it that seems like the only answer if there is no signs of a leak.....

The shop has not offered to come good for repairs, but we have not asked yet, this shop has done all the work on my mother and fathers vehicles since they moved here , it WAS just a simple mistake, We talked about it here and everyone sort of agreed that forgiveness MIGHT get us farther ahead this time around , my truck is going into the shop on monday to get a whole bunch of work done to it that i just plainly do not have time to do , dad's truck is going back in for an alignment soon, amongst other things, and i have a feeling that the bill for that work might be slightly smaller than it would have been otherwise

that is why i do 95% of my own maintenance!!!-so i know it is done right!! when i have to take it to the dealer - like i did two weeks ago for a transmission flush- i checked the fluid level as soon as i got home- it was almost a quart overfilled!!!! so, i drained the extra quart out (i have the pml tranny pan with the drain plug) i would never have a shop preform some type of maintenance with dealt my fluids and not double check their work immediately- you are just asking for problems and a big repair bill!!!!

Don't get me started about checking everything anybody does to your truck before driving off. Let them see you do it or ask them to show you the work that has been done every time. This tell them that they had better be thorough on your rig whenever you bring it in. Chrysler dealer in Escondido repaired my dad's rear end in his Jeep Comanche some years back. Driving home it got really loud so he parked it and called to ask what was wrong. They said bring it back....boom! gears and all all over I-15. Tech did a great job sealing the cover, didn't notice any leak because he never put any lube in. I know that one is hard to check but nothing gets by my old man anymore. He makes them show him everything on the repair orders before he pays. Kurt
