Chebby diesel problems

My neighbor has around a 92 Chebby. It is sending smoke/fuel out the pipe (can not stand to be near it) and now has degraded to barely running. Any ideas (besides my suggestion of getting a cummins!).

Thanks

Sounds like the engine is out of time. This happend to me uncles 95 chevy. I would get it checked because not long after the truck sliped time he lost an injection pump. got a new one never retimed it lost the second injection pump. retimed it with a new pump and has been good until it sold.
3 months later :
DM01

Right before my dad's injection pump died, the only thing it would do is shudder real bad. The place also retimed and even advanced the timing a little when they replaced it.

I had an '82 GMC diesel for a long time. Shortly after purchase, it started to run poorly.
I found a good diesel mechanic and he told me that these engines often jump timing after high mileage.
I dont know about the 6.5's, but the 6.2's have a timing chain. It is fairly long and prone to stretch after high mileage.
That is exactly what happend.... and yes, it eat the pump too.

I had the timing chain replaced, new pump and had the timing bumped up a little.
Truck ran great after that.

Rich.

What you have isn't chebby diesel problems, it is chebby diesel standard fare. I went through them as well.

You have a problem with your:

Injection pump
timing chain
fuel sensor
water in fuel
or air in the lines.

Take you pick and get it fixed before your pump fails.

Re:Chebby diesel problems

I dont think the timing chain is the problem.

it is the fact the drive for the injection pump is driven by it.

The pump is so precise and the chain lacks so much tolerance.

Some guys have successfully converted the chain to a gear drive that is offered to marine applications.

But still in all....you are right....the guy who designed the timing chain was probably promoted to the designer of the new front ends and the avalanche in general.
