Not likely, besides they drain the oil start the engine and run a silicon(bead blaster) solution through it.

 

Engine and tranys have to be destroyed before they are delivered to the compactor. The salvage yards can scrap out all items except the engine and trans.

I was talking to a friend who owns a yard and he indicated in Kansas there are 19 yards that the gov't allows to receive there vehicles. They must have a compactor on site to qualify.

So the answer is if you want the engine it can't be used in the Cash For Clunkers debacle.

 

IIRC you can only trade in a car/truck if its less then 25 years old, was given EPA fuel mileage number. So being to the best of my knowledge no 3/4 or 1 ton truck never had an EPA fuel mileage number, they don't qualify for the cash for clunker program.

 

The 3/4 & 1 ton are classified as heavy truck (class 3 I think they called it on the cash for clunkers) and they can only be traded in on a class 2 or class 3 truck and you can only get $3500. The age limit is the only limitation for this heavy size.

 

Trying to get one right now, I am working the dealer to allow me to destroy the block by drilling holes and removing a chunk of the block. The crank, rods etc. would make it worth while to do.......

And there is not other part of the vehicle that is required to be destroyed, the only other requirement is it go to a salvage facility, get a junk title ( never be able to be returned to the road ) and be crushed within 180 days.

Got lines on over 100 of them right now, one just happens to be a 91 std cab 5 speed 4X4 CTD....... Hate to do it to teh girl, but she isn't worth 4500 together as rusty as she is.

 

Good Luck, Pat- out here in Kalifornia the dealers are too scared to even let you keep the extra set of keys. They say the program requires destruction by a certified tech who completes an on-line course to do the dirty work of killing the engine.

 

To me, it just sounds stupid. Typcial arrogance, taking decent running veichles off the road when they could be used in other situations. Really a short-term gain/long term loss in my book. Sorry, pretty political, but that's just how it seems to be.

I agree, and its supposedly gonna boost the economy...Kia had an ad on the radio the other day selling brand new cars for like 4000 if you trade in a cash for clunker vehicle. How much boosting of the economy is happening selling a car for that cheap...and are Kia's even American made?

 

Maybe they are trying to get the scrap prices higher and intern bring in more money from the mills for melting it down and shipping the metal overseas so they can build more cars next year. What a vicious circle.

 

I think the program is not all that either. people driving clunkers becasue they can't afford a payment. Don't get me wrong there are people out there that got money to blow. The person needing the new car can't afford a payment but are drawn in to get one and before they know it they got a payment for 5-6 years and maybe not a job on the horizon. That just leaves us back to where we are now more repos and people upside down on their bills.
Not well thought out in my book, but just my opinion.

 

Oh, I am offering a bunch more than the 100 bucks we are paying for the others......... One thing Car dealers are, is entrepreneurs.

It also helps that we have the Junkyard License.......

 

It would be nice to see a larger incentive for purchasing domestic vs. foreighn vehicles to further stimulate OUR economy.

 

Maybe the government should give me 50 bucks to trade in my old toilet for a newer model that uses less water?

I like the extra incentive idea, give em an extra 500 bucks to buy an American car. The idea mentioned about scrap prices is good and all but, if scrap yards keep taking in all these cars, won't the price go down? Less demand because of an excess of vehicles will drop the scrap price. And they're just gonna ship it to China anyways...Thats where the incentive should be, make sure these junk cars stay here.
