Cardboard over rad
Kind of a stupid question...But if I block off the complete rad with cardboard, could I cause damage to the rad?Like the fan sucking the rad into it..

I do it every year.........
I cut a 5" hole in the center of my cardboard so the fan clutch can "see" the cold air and not try to engage.
I also try to use a piece of cardboard that has a 'slick printed' side to keep the moisture from breaking it down.

I'm battling away with this cab heat problem...Tried three different cummins t-stat....One stock...that didn't work....Then the upgrade..that didn't work...Then the slow opening one...forget it...no luck, samething, low operting temp.Today I stuffed card that only 1/8 of the rad would show..Same thing.Thought of blocking the whole rad...See if that works..haven't tried it yet.Even since I cleaned all the mud out of the rad and flush the system, and replaced the heater core and removed all the air...That when I got my problems...I had good heat years ago with everything plugged up and brown anti-freeze...I think I will buy a heavier winter jacket..

I didn't know that if the clutch fan sees cold air it will not engage...Wonder if I have a fan problem???I have to check that.

Do you have an IR temp gun? That might help to see if the thermostat is bypassing still. But to throw cardboard in there shouldn't be a problem. I would cover the I/C as well if you aren't towing.
Test the fan clutch. you should be able to hear it at higher RPM, but with the engine off, the fan should be able to slowly turn by hand.

Bet I didn't have 4" on either side of the Rad core exposed, and I didn't pull it out until it was 40 ish degrees, never saw the temp rise above 190 till then.

Old pizza boxes work great, they tear off to almost the perfect size..LOL..and the grease they soak up "water-proofs" them
I do this every year when it gets down into the 30's, as stated, just make sure the fan clutch is exposed so it stays cool...

If you're don't want to use the cardboard in fear of it getting wet and breaking down. Use an old rubber mud flap from a semi, thats what I did for a couple winters before I got a cold front for my truck. I cut a 6 inch hole in the middle of it and put it between the IC and the radiator. Worked great and was reusable for the next winter. You can get a mud flap cheap or do what I did, if youhave a friend with a semi they might have an old one laying around.
