White smoke is unburned fuel. Steam would be coolant from a head gasket. Steam dissipates quickly, smoke doesn't.

On our track vehicles, we dump raw diesel into the exhaust side of the turbo to generate smoke, lots of it. Now that the Army, in its mind boggling wisdom, is running nothing but JP-8 we can't get no smoke. They will probably come up with some $20.00 per gallon stuff to do it now.<br>JP-8 is giving the rotary injector pumps fits. It doesn't lubricate worth a crap and gives about 15% less power. The GM 6.2 and 6.5 seem to handle it ok but the Cats, Cummins, and big Continentals don't like it.
