The Big 3 - auto trans and manuals in diesel pickups
Wow, that's interesting. Looks like you need to do some more research. Fact is the Dodge auto is fine for a stock truck but after a chip or two it's a different story. Many people have problems with the converters slipping like it's driving on ice. On the other hand I know of countless stock Torqshift owners and stock Allison owners that have no problems running deep into the 13's without problems. The Dodge might hold that, but not for near as long. I'm all for Dodge, but even I know that Ford and Chevy have the better trannies...up until the 68rfe....now we may have the best of both.

Funny thing is I know two local tranny shop owners that make their living off of exactly the opposite. In stock trim they see less dodge 47/48re trannys fail than the chevs and fords. Once bombed well..... no one else makes the torque a Cummins makes so you cant compare.

Think whatever you want. I've read on other forums and heard from other owners that I have spoken with around town who have told me of mid 13 second times on stock Allison trannys. Over on the Ford forum I am on I know guys with stock 6.0 tranny's running low 14's to mid 13's on stock ones. Of course I know that not every truck will do it, but there are some that do.

True but ya gotta keep in mind all your need is a 4inch exhaust air intake and the decent chip, along with a good driver and you can get one in high 13's...

You will be lucky to get more than 2 or 3 mid 13 second passes out of a stock allison, and even then, thats only if it doesnt decide to limp.
Well maybe you should tell your fellow duramax drivers to stop lying then, eh?
Just seems wierd to me that guys who ran stock regular cabs to a low 15's chip it, put on intake and exhaust and then have a 13 second truck whose tranny would grenade itself.

Facts from a Tranny shop in Denton, TX owned by my brother-in-law, showed that more Allison and Ford Automatc trannys had to be worked on than the 48RE. Also from a tranny shop owners experince, the Auto is a better towing tranny(check out the HOTSHOTTERS), and yes a modded truck needs a modded tranny.

i have a buddy who has a 02 2500 chevy Hd duramax with a manual tranny, all he has on it is a superchip and he has replaced the clutch in it three times in the last two years. he has somewhere around 60,000 miles on it if i remember correctly.

Are you speaking of Tim from the "other board'?? You guys related?
I looked for a Ford XLT diesel with a manual and there just weren't any to be had. At the time I heard that the dual disc clutches in the Ford were giving trouble. Plus the Fords were too expensive, dealers weren't dealing on them and I don't like the interior anyway.
Same story for a Duramax with a manual... none to be found. I was all done with GM's autos.
I bought a Dodge because of Cummins and I could get a manual behind it on any trim level I wanted without having to special order. I just first had to get over the fact that it was a Dodge. Though I've been pleased with my truck so far, I bought it for the engine and transmission, the Dodge just came with them.

All I know is that Tim and my brotherinlaw(a Ford 7.3 man) had a bet on which would be brought in for the least repairs. The 48RE won. Maybe more Ford and Chevys on the road. I don't know. Maybe Dodge has more manuels on the road. Just reporting the final results. I think they just kept track of auto's, since they both have one.
