Best of all generations

I am wondering if I could get some opinions of which is the best over all truck between all 3 generations of dodge/cummins diesels.

Based upon engine ( liter and valve), transmissions, rearends, suspensions, body, longevity, and availability of parts ?

I would look for a '96-'98 12 Valve. Tons of aftermarket support, and they will last forever. The best of the 12 Valves. I would look for a 5spd, but the auto's can be built very stout.

I love my 1st Gen, but they will never make the power a 2nd gen 12 Valve will, and most companies forgot Dodge had a diesel truck before '94. 1st Gens look the best though.

Early third gen, but I might be biased. (As would most anyone who answers this!)

Up until they started adding the exhaust treatment crap. I think the 04's were good. After that I think they started adding EGR, Cats, etc. Late '03s and 04s (I think) had none of that.

What years did they start having problems with the injectors on 3rd generations ?

So you think '05 is when they started EGR, Cats, etc. ???

04.5 is when they changed the ECM, added a 3rd injection event and added a catalytic converter. '07.5 is when they added EGR with the new 6.7L. 03-04 get better mileage than the 04.5-07, but the 04.5-07 has a bit more power and better valve seats. I really liked my 02, but I knew eventually the injection pump was going to die and I really need 4 full-size doors, so the 04.5 filled the need.

I love both of my trucks, but for different reasons. Ill never get rid of my 98. and IF I ever get rid of my 04.5 it would be for an 06-07 QC LB. (just because of the new front end) I dont mind having the cat, BUT I DONT want the Exhaust Gas Recirculator on the 6.7.

What are you going to use it for? "Best" is a pretty wide open word.

Best meaning to mostly pull a 18 foot car trailer around Ohio and surrounding states. Hauling wood in the bed. Maybe a little snowplowing. And just normal odds and ends work of a pickup truck.

Thanks guys for all your input !

Is there a problem with early 3rd generation ( '03-'04.5 ) valve seats ?

Catalytic converters can be removed and straight pipe replace them when you put a new exhaust on right ? Or no because of emissions reasons ?
