Back 2 Life
I have the oppourtunity of buying a (dont hate me) 1984 chevy 3/4 ton w/ 6.2 diesel. i would post at a chevy diesel forum but they dont seem to know as much as people here. Im still a CTD fan but the engine only has 20,000 miles and he's asking 500$ for it and i thought it was a good deal. Anyway, the truck has been sitting about 3 years and i was wondering what i should do so i wont destroy the engine before starting it up the first time. I'm planning on draining the fuel from the tank/lines, new glow plugs, new filters, oil change, coolant flush. Anything else? thanks!
p.s. i have a great since of humor so bring on the chevy jokes!

You may get lucky but plan on changing every seal and hose in the truck! The rubber tends to dry out and harden with age and sitting. Also every fluid should be changed out. With only 20k miles and that old you may want to find out why it was parked. Also look out for stray rattlers hanging out. They can really make ya jump on the test drive.

When you have the glow plugs out squirt a little bit of marvel mystery oil or something similar down the hole. This will lube the rings a little bit and cause less damage on a dry crank. It's been sitting 3 years...

Well, you wont be out too much money by purchasing it, go get it, load on trailer, take home, start tearing into it. Fuel, filters, and other fluids are the big items. 3 years isnt terrible for sitting. i have seen a lot worse. you may get into replacing seals and hoses on it, but you could get lucky... you say the engine has 20k on it? is that original to the truck or a replacement engine? if it is a more recently rebuilt engine, you may do fine as everything will be newer, as far as hoses and seals. Good luck on your find.

The engine is a rebuild from what the guy tells me. I did inquire as to why it has been sitting. He tells me he bought a newer truck and ran out of use for it and parked it. The main reason i want this truck is i would like to do a restoration on it. i have taken auto body classes in the past and while the engine is running (which it was when parked) i will slowly fix/replace body panels. i have a pretty good knowledge of these older chevy trucks as between my grandfather, my dad, and myself, we have owned about 10 of them. next year i plan on taking a diesel mechanics class and hopefully rebuild the engine or replace it w/ a 92 or 93 6.5 turbo. But never fear, im keeping my 87 dodge 1/2 ton into which i would like to swap in a CTD for the tired 318. my love affair w/ diesel goes way back. my dad was a trucker when i was a kid. lotsa memories of waking up at 3 a.m. to go on a run w/ him!
