auxilary fuel tank's

Well I've talked to several company's and they all seem to have a different story about tank's that hook into your factoy fuel line's. Some say they're legal, and some say not. Depend's on if they have them or not.

What my problem is the 48' trailer I pull. I can't have a tank taller than 20". I'm worried about tearing of a pump handle off. My freind allready tore up a tool box. It was an extreme situation, but some of the place's we have to get to are like that. So, I would really like a tank that I could hook into the fuel line's.

I've tried to sift through what everyone is saying. From what I can get out of it, it is illegal for a tank to siphon or gravity feed. But it seem's if you have one that is pumped by your factory electic pump, it is ok. I go through the weight station's so I have to be absolute legal.

So can anyone give me the straight poop on this. And, what's everyone have for tank's, and where did you get them. I'd like to get a 100 gal or so. Thank's

I put a tank where the spare tire should go. With a dually, you always have a spare anyway.

fuel tank

Mine is 6x18 by 58 lg. custom made for me out of diamond plate alumium. Stands up on edge and is still below top of box. Holds 26 gal. and is gravity fed into main tank by ball valve, works great, don't know if it's legal or not, but I don't have to cross the scales. Bought diesel for 2.10 last night.

Transfer Flow tanks are a bit pricey, but they are worth it. I believe that they are 50-state legal. They have their own computer and pump to transfer fuel from the aux. tank to the main tank. Mine is a 74 gallon wedge tank, and the filler sticks up above the box just 1/2 inch or so. I wouldn't be without it.

All semis gravity from one side tank to the other to keep them equal, they have a crossover line on the bottom of the tanks to equalize them, the rule is " A fuel system must not supply fuel by gravity or syphon feed directly to the carburetor or injector" if you want to read the DOT rules.. http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rulesregs/f...egs/393.65.htm
By the way I love my RDS 91 gal toolbox combo tank that gravity feeds to the main tank

I gather that you are hauling commercially. You are required by law to have a copy of FMCSA regualtions. Just read what it says about fuel tanks. There is a difference between gas and diesel. Another way to do it fully legal is to hook up the big tank as the main tank and just hook up a cheap pump to pump the 30 odd gallons into it when low. The gravity feed discussed is different, like the old model T Fords had. You have an injection pump and a transfer pump, that is the end of gravity feed.

You are prevented from legally running a tank on the trailer and hooking it up to the main tank. But you can refill the main tank from the trailer if you choose.

Fuel tank

Bill I had mine made in a place in Ind. called, Glenco Mfg. co. It is near Hillsdale Ind. which is about 35 miles north of Terre Haute. We where down their one Yr. for the covered bridge festival in Rockville Ind. Was riding around and saw their sign on the road. They make aluim. trailers and water tanks. Went home drew up plans, mailed plans to them and they built it to my specs. Cost me 400.00 dollars, to me it's worth it. I can take on about 56 gals. on a fill up. I have a 2.0 inch fill pipe so it will take the big nozzels also. I live in Holland, Mich and when I'm full of fuel, both tanks, going on a trip to the south west, my first fuel stop is at the Flying J in Sullivan, Missouri. Thats pulling my fifth wh. Not to bad I don't think. Farm Fleet sells steel tanks, that wont stick up above your box but take up more floor space. I did'nt want that cause I have to still use most of my truck box for fire wood and who knows what. If you want I can send a picture, but I need an e-mail address. Cause I don't know how to send them over on this fourm. waam Holland, Mich.

Would you be able to take a pic of your tank. I contacted RDS. They told me I had to go through a supplier. I contaed the supplier, they said I had to go through a retailer. Got ahold of them, they didn't know what I was talking about. If you dodn't mind me asking, where did you get your tank, and how much was it. Thank's again to everyone.

I would like info on the 91 gallon RDS as well. Christmas is approaching and my parents are asking what I want. I want a tool box and I am about to start brewing biodiesel at home and would like to brew batches large enough to last me a good portion of an oil change.

I saw a 91 gallon in Northern Tool that looked similar to the RDS...maybe that was it. I would like other sources, if possible, though.

Sorry to steal your topic a bit, but I didn't want to start a new one on the same subject.

Does anyone know of any places to buy an aux tank that fits a roll top cover (still undecided on the brand). I found this site, http://www.auxtank.com/auxtank/display_tank.asp?ID=108 , but at $1615 , I rather just not get it.

Thanks in advance.

waam, can you send me a pic of your fuel tank...I'll PM you an email address.
Does anyone know of a tank that goes over your wheel fender in the bed....long way from front to back. I'd like extra fuel capacity, but still need to be able to put the slide in camper in the truck.

I was looking at the RDS site and came across the a tour of their plant. Makes you appreciate their tanks.
