Diesel Emission Laws Changing...What's the Real Story?

I've heard that light-duty diesel engines (including pickups) in four or five years (2009?) will have to meet some pretty incredible new emission requirements, and that current engines don't have a chance in the world of meeting them.

And even with new engines, "aftertreatment" setups in the exhaust will have to be used...

So what's the truth? What's going to happen? Any ideas?

Err, I know Ultra-Low sulfur fuels will enable vastly reduce SOx emissions. I'm sure that the stupid hydrogen lobby's trying to make Diesel obsolete, so it doesn't sound tooo far fetched.
