auto or manual?
If all you are doing is driving & Mud, it proably may not make a diffrrenece. If the Mud puts a lot of strain on the tranny (not sure that is really possible, compared to towing), the manual may be better.
I think the auto's tend to be more troublesome than the manuals, with a convience trade-off, ease of use.

Auto = faster... But more possible problems although on the contrary getting mud up into a clutch can cause problems fast.
Make sure to run your vent tubes up to a high spot.
And LOL, umm... Lots of mudding eh with a big heavy truck that has a motor that hates water. I think you'll be better served looking at something else.
In that era I'd be looking Toyota truck, TJ jeep or gasser dodge in 1/2 or 3/4 ton... Not in any order there, those would be what I'd use for wheeling though... Not a 7000+ lb truck made for pulling trailers... My old 2004 1/2 ton 2wd dodge will make through more mud than my 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel FYI stock vs stock... This thing sinks in wet grass. I never got my 1500 stuck and had this 4x4 stuck the second week I had it. By the time we got back it had sunk because it weighs so much.

Like JoeT said...get a secondary truck for mudder. I have a 2wd (auto, bout to be manual-I say get manual) that gets stuck in wet grass also. I have a 79 Ford F150 4wd 400 4sp. on 36s, grand total in it now-$600.
