ATTN: 2002 Model Year Owners
I traded my 02 h.o. 2wd. for a 600 4wd. because I was tired of getting stuck. My anti-spin rear end would never lock in when I needed it . I had it to 3 different dealers to try and fix . They all told me it was working as designed . Once I pulled on the sholder of the road on level ground , with one wheel in wet grass and the other on the pavement , and could not go anywhere. I ended up having to get someone to pull me out . Another time I got stuck in my yard and had to get my 8 month pregnant wife to pull me out with the Polaris 700 ! I loved the motor though . I wish my new truck had the 02 H.O. motor .
1}1 lift pump, and 1 holley pusher failure so far
2}VP-44 @ 70k no apparent reason
3} driveshaft fell off 2 weeks ago,u-joint completly failed

John, if you ever find yourself "stuck" again with one wheel on pavement and the other on slippery grass, try this trick:
Step on your brakes a little. The resistance of the brakes will apply enough resistance to the free-spinning wheel that it will force the diff the transfer some power to the wheel with traction.
I'm glad you like your new truck. But that's about the most expensive differential upgrade you can get

I'm happy as can be with mine! I prefer the sound of the 2nd gen. over 3rd, it's a more classic diesel sound. It's an in you face kind of sound, plus it's fun to watch people franticaly trying to roll up their window when they're tring to talk on their cell phone and I pull up. I did add sound proofing to the floor/doors and ATP bankets which improved my MPG and cut interior noise.
The only problem I've had with mine was the A/C condensation not draining correctly through the firewall. The pading under the carpet on the passengers side got soaked. I just put a peice of hose on to extent the drain and haven't had a problem since.
45,000 miles, original tires, lift pump is fine.

Hohn , I tried that trick as well as the parking brake. I think the camper tow package anti-sway bar didn't help things either . I have had this new 600 4wd. in worse places and still have not used the 4wd.
Man the more I read in 3rd gen forum the worst things get. now the weather striping on the doors are falling off among other things. I still think there sharp trucks and I cant blame cummins for making the quiter motor because it was getting to the point where people wouldnt by a cummins just because of the noise. I like it tho
after all it is a truck ,....some people seem to forget that

Ive heard lift pump horror stories but mine seems to work fine. Do I have a cherrie or is the 02' Model the most ironed out Model yet. I think I did good on not waiting for the new body style. and getting the first of the kind sort of. Is your 02' as reliable as mine???

John, the best option available for a CTD is 4 wheel drive. In my truck I would have been stuck on gravel roads, wet grass. You could spit under the tires in grass and be stuck. I don't know how people make it with a Cummins and 2 wd. Also I have been loaded where it wouldn't take off in 1 gear 2hi and had to go to 4 lo just to get rolling (I bet the weight police love hearing that!)
I bought mine new in june of 99 and love it! Had the usual LP pump failures at 58000 miles also burnt up the Injector pump at the same time all covered. Actually after I got the new injector pump I went ahead and put my PM2 back on made it about the length of the entrance ramp at WOT and it died again. They put this one on and it's been good every since. BTW if anyone needs someone to pull off the wiring harness in a hurry on the side of the road let me know!

Traded in my '02 in March on'04. Lift pump and VP44 dead shortly before trade in. Neighbor has same truck, same problems except 2 LP's dead. Both had about 80,000 miles. Other than that, truck was great. Only other problem was front driveshaft u-joint/cv-joint linkage going into transfer case. Seems 9 out of 10 Dodge 4x4's have this problem, no matter what year.
Resale values on 2nd Gen trucks is dropping steady. Could pick up low mileage '02 for $25,000 Can.
