Attention: auto diesel technicians?
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but in most corp affairs, it's grounds for immediate dismissal when fussing over who makes what.
Don't flame the messenger please.
You might think real hard on your wording of asking for a raise.

You've reached the golden age where you NEED to keep what YOU know to yourself. In this line of work if you show all your tricks and experience, soon you'll be the one they don't need. I'm the only one in our shop with Cummins experience and it's a well known fact that while I'm helpful to others, if you have a prob or question with a diesel....don't bother. I don't even care if some guy is changing a fuel filter and can't get it started. Give me the RO, tear your flag off, and push it on down to my stall.....and yes, I hate having to be in this field of work.

I like what was stated before, thats why tool boxes have wheels on them!!
i agree with you j-body. nothing sucks worse than having to hold your co-workers hands cuz they don't know squat about how to use a multimeter, or better yet, having to borrow "my" multimeter, that peeves me off more than anything." if u wanna work here, then buy your own ******* tools."
i am still young (21) and the new guys are older than me (26, and 42) , but they are still too lazy to look in the service manual or on the PC in service information for technical bulletins etc... and yes, flat rate sucks, and warranty anything sucks even worse because GM is cheap to pay you. it's no wonder we
, and not coffee either!

i hate to say it but ASE doesnt really mean jack squat. actually just means you can read a book and pass a test. my dad works for FedEX, his counter part at his shop is my older brother, they havea guy at the other shop that is "ASE" certified, he can work on straight trucks but says he doesnt know how to work on a FL-700 which is the same **** thing. Heck i could get ASE certified if i wanted to. Plus nothing against the guy that started this thread, but i personally dont trust or depend on dealer mechanics. from my experience they dont know swhat they are doing or just dont really care, not saying you dont just my own experience. heck everytime my brother has taken his truck into a dealer the first person that looks at it is either him or my dad so they know what is wrong. my brother had a sensor go out on his turbo and all the dealer did was reprogram his computer and 50 miles later he had the same dang problem. so i would have to say the dealers around me suck. and you mgith as well start you own business or find a different job that will appreciate your knowledge or diesels. cuz most likely they will be more willing to find another guy to replace you rahter than comply with your request, because they might see ou as a "problem child" rather than a dedicated employee. Just my 2 cents worth.

i agree with you 6Lpowerstroke, there are alot of mechanics in general, not just dealership mechanics that "just don't care" about what they are doing. the reason i know this is because i work with a couple of them and have to fix there mistakes, and i also work on what other mechanics outside the area have attempted to fix but have failed. there are however, mechanics that "DO" care about what they do and produce quality work, so don't go flamin all "dealership" mechanics because of one bad deal. mistakes do happen even though everyone who brings there stuff into the shop doesnt realize that we are humans, not robots, and do make mistakes
. and if it is so easy to become an ASE master technician, then go get it done. i never studied the "books" you are talking about, so i don't know if they are helpful or not. good luck, its not near as easy as you produce it to be.

i should add thats its not just some mechanics can do good work, and some don't care. all people in general, in any profession can either not care or do a quality job. like when you go to a restaurant to eat, some waitresses care to make sure you always have at least a half full drink, while others don't care.
We had a customer that was a doctor when I worked at a Volvo dealer in the late 70s.
He complained about everything.
He started complaining one day because his car had to be brought back in for the third time to attempt to repair a "sometimes" problem.
He stated that he was a doctor and was required to know everything about anatomy before he could become a doctor. And why don't the mechanics know as much about their "Patients".
The service manager informed him that as a doctor, he only had to memorize two different models, Male & Female, and their parts don't change or move from year to year.
And as for "come backs".....doctors bury theirs.
The doctor went back to the waiting room.

Gottahavediesel:
i wasnt trying to bash on you at all. i never said all of the dealer mechanics suck. the ones around me suck. and if you are ASE certified you should be able to tell someone that a deisel does not have spark plugs. i know that most of dealer mechanics know what they are doing but i owuld much rather go to my father for help because paying $40 an hour plus 150+% part mark up is bs when you can do alto of the little stuff yourself at a big fraction of the price, but iguess imlucky and am i and good situation having a dad and brother that are so good with vehicles.
shovel:
that is very true. people with money think they know everything just because they have the money and you should do their bidding. i had an ex that her dad is well to do and her check engine light came on and they took it to the dealer and the dealer said that a sensor in the gas fill tube was bad and needed to be replaced and that ethanol gas was to blame for the problem. i havent ever had any problems with ethanol before and i never have encountered a sensor in a fill tube. i tred to explain that to her but of course daddy knew best. and they never had that problem again, my guess was they reconfiged the comp and charged for the part. bt i dont have to really worry about a com thankfully.

Another from the Volvo Customer Cronicles:
Customer came in complaining that his high buck Blaupunkt radio in his Top-O-the-Line Volvo was losing the station when going through tunnels, and under large bridges.
Customer stated that he was a pilot, and his airplane used a 'special' antenna cable, and NEVER had a problem losing the radio signal.
He then asked why Volvo didn't use the same 'special' cable to prevent this from happening.
Service Manager asked him how often did he fly his plane through a tunnel.
"Fly-Boy" went back to the waiting room.

I am actually going through the training right now to become a tech. The first thing I learned in school was that my toolbox has wheels. In this area (DC) if you are working at a dealership you should be getting minimum (with only 4 ASE, which I will be the first to tell you only mean you can pass a test) 22 per Hour. Hell PepBoys up here is starting ASE techs at 18, and it goes up from there. Your tool box has wheels. If you know what your doing in the automotive field you wont be at a loss for work. There truly is a LARGE need out there for guys who truely know what they are doing on a vehicle. Roll on bro!
