9000 miles = 1 VP44

Well just about all of the cummins trucks in service have gone through VP44's except mine..

climbing up a hill at about 25k to 30K pounds the engine starts cutting out and the check engine light is comming on every time the engine cuts. Get to the top and Kick in the PTO Compressor and the engine dies.. DANG!!!!

Keep trying and finally get the job done... Ready to leave... Dead pedal and Check engine light... Double DANG (time to go home!!!)....

1st gear down the big hill and at the bottom the check engine light goes out (for a few miles anyway) and limp it back to the yard....

Mechanic tells me "yea yours was the last one with the origional VP44" most of the truck are on their 3rd or 4th"

No wonder all the new truck have CAT's in them now...

You must have a different truck than the one in your sig?

3rd gen's don't have VP44's.

Gerry, sounds like the 368 code for timing advance failure got ya. This code as well as the symptoms on business class Freightliners can also show up due to a restriction in the low pressure fuel system. Freightliner is real bad about putting a small in line fuel filter before the lift pump. Most guys overlook this since they sit most of the time above the bell housing.

I have found quite a few business classes throwing this code and the only problem was a high fuel restriction not allowing the VP44 to advance timing which causes the code.

Sounds like yours was indeed the VP44 pump, however anyone running a business class should be aware of the inline fuel filter that may be on there truck.

I'll mention that the the Mechanic (he is my cousin also.. makes for a great running truck).. I love the truck and it pulls hard for the wieght.. beats the heck out of the old Fords with the 7.3's we had.

One problem is that the driver seat is real good but that is where the assistants sit... My seat (while chaufered around) is not all that confortable. have a hard time sleeping there. seat back seems like it almost leans forward..
