Its pretty sweet, but its just another V8 diesel If it was a 6cyl cat he would have a little something.

Ihave a 3208, it drinks fuel, my ctd has more power. So what is the purpose? It is yesterdays engine, might as well put a 318 Detroit in it. The engine is a dinosaur today.

Why put a "modern" engine in a 69? The truck is a "dinosaur" itself.

If you look reeeeealy close at the engine photo, its tucked in the back valley of the intake manifold area. The turbo draws through the top plenum of the manifold (where the filter is) and then boosts directly into a sub plenum feeding the cylinders. NO INTERCOOLER.. So its probably below 15 psi boost, my guess..

If he had enough money to resore the truck, buy and probably rebuild the Cat, mate it to the allison, I seriously doubt he cares about the "fuel milage"!

Your ctd only has more power because it's offered in a light duty pickup truck in which aftermarket performance parts are available and in high demand. If the cat was offered today in new pickups there would be same mods available for them.

I would give anything to put a new Cat C7 in my 05 dodge or even better a new ford. (i like the body style). Not only because it's more powerful (350hp with 860 lb-ft from the factory) but nobody else has one in a pickup. Dare to be different.

Gotta agree with HID, the engine is a disposable boat anchor (and I hate to say that about a Cat, sorta like the Pinto and the Vega) but the conversion is beautiful even in a Ford.

I believe they called the trucks in those years High Boys or something like that. Ford didn't want to spend extra money to develop a different cab for the four wheel drives so they just lifted the chassis a little more. I think that is how it went anyway. They were a tough looking truck though.

That is one sweet looking resto
I have a 3208 in a Ford tandem louisville truck. Truck has a 20' grain body on it, hauls about 550 bu. Loaded at 30K, it runs pretty darn well for as old as it is. But I will tell you this, it is running a few more than 210 horse (standard output)

Look closely at the pic of the truck, see how far the oil pan hangs down!!

Eric, you have hit the bull's eye dead center. Yes, the Cat V8 is not much better than other V8 diesels. I can remember years back when some tandem cement trucks had the Cat V8 diesels installed for hauling locally and they worked out not too bad. As long as the trucks had to haul a heavy load under twenty miles in urban traffic and then stop and unload they stood up to the job, but if the engines were in some transport body job that traveled long distances they would not stand up and had problems. Apparently if the engine was relieved of high torque demands by running at urban speeds in lower gears most of the time it worked fine, but if it had to pull along in top gear for hundreds of miles it had bearing and other problems. I drove old Peters with 8V92 screaming jimmys and those engines got tired if they saw a grade five miles ahead. If the engine speed was not kept well above 2400 rpm the engine could not pull your hat off your head. V8 engines are more suitable for high speed running on level terrain. V8 diesels like gasoline V8 engines have two connecting rod heads on each crankshaft throw and will never be as stong in the bottom end as an inline engine with one con rod per crank throw with a main bearing on either side of the throw. The inline engine can stay together while lugging at low rpm a lot longer than a V8 will.

..The diesel pickup revolution has seen(and moved past) the performance of the IDI engines, and that's years past. "Performance shops" like ATS and Banks had developed the aftermarket turbo systems for the GM and Ford(Navistar) diesel engines prior to their modern direct injected designs. The 3208 is IDI, parent bore and usually naturally aspirated. They were available with turbos too, usually rated at 275hp, and as 'Lil Dog mentioned, running no more than 15 psi of boost. This reminds me of Ford, a year or two before the Powerstroke came out (1994), they made a factory turbo version available for the 7.3L engine. I also remember when the 7.3 guys were desperate for more fuel, internal parts from the injection pump on a 3208 seemed to work.
