6.4L fuel issues

You guys are going to love this. One of our shop trucks is a F450 6.4L full load at $70K and lately it has been leaving puddles on the ground like a new puppie. We checked the oil and it was slightly high by a litre. Now this engine isn't known for great mileage but the last tank of fuel it went 60 miles and the fuel light came on. Let's see...1.5 mpg can't be good but we only lease the truck so off it went to the Ford dealership.

This is were it gets good. The dealer calls and says, you must have filled the oil up too high, as it has 11 litres too much. We say, I think you have a bigger problem than just a oil leak. So they drop the oil and as we suspected, they find lots of fuel in the oil.

Now this is were it gets great. Ford phones their tech line and says they found fuel in the oil. Ford says, "That is ok, as long as it isn't more than 1" of total volume of oil in the pan"...... ***......They can't be serious. They told the service manager to drop the pan and put the contaminated oil back into the pan and let sit over night, than measure it to see if it is under or over 1" of fuel per volume of pan. Can you believe Ford thinks it's normal to have raw fuel in the oil !!!!!!!!!#@$%! Chances are they are going to say, it's good to go and we will have to drive it til it calfs, which can't be long.

I forsee another 6.0L engine in Fords hand.

As soon as I saw that they mounted the injection pump inside the crancase on the 6.4 I knew that would never be a good thing. I can't believe they don't see anything wrong with having a solvent in with the engine's lubricant. Talk about accelerated bearing wear. Quiet or not, inside the crankcase is the absolute stupidest place to put a HPCR injection pump.

holy cow!

That is one of the more out there things I have heard, even about a Ford! I can hardly believe that they would even HAVE a spec for how much fuel can be in your crankcase!

I sure love my old-school, mechanical straight six with the fuel pumps on the OUTSIDE of the engine where you can see and repair them..

I'm practically speechless!

What do you expect from a company that doesn't put a fuel heater on their trucks but if you jell up it takes out the injectors

Thats funny Have you seen the new commercial about how there's a new cab heater that heats up the interior of the truck on cold mornings. Their technology goes into how comforting the interior is insteads of their engines Maybe thats why my interior sucks. Dodge puts the technology in the engine not the cab.

johnny 5.9, your 100% correct. They say it's the pump that is leaking into the crankcase.

I couldn't believe it when I saw that design. I thought it was a bad idea but what do I know? I didn't go to college for mechanical engineering for years. They say they mounted it inside to reduce the noise. It seems like it will do a good job of that. When the engine dies it'll be the quietest diesel on the road, or should I say to the side of it.

how much "noise" does a fuel pump make anyway? It IS a diesel engine after all...

yes, I bet that design will quiet down many a Ford...

The way I look at it. If you're so concerned with diesel racket that the sound of a little injection pump is offensive buy a gasser because you have no business buying a diesel. I don't think the sound of my LBZ is at all objectionable even on a long trip. I wouldn't want it any quieter. That sweet sound of power is a constant reminder of why I payed an extra $7000.

And all those enginerds couldn't see how this could be a potential problem?

Oh, that's right-- NVH matter more than engine reliability. At least you'll be comfortable waiting for the tow truck.

I thought the same thing when Cummins started putting the injectors under the valve cover. Now they all do it.
