4bt ??

I know this is off topic for the first gen group but does anyone know anything about the 4BT? I have an old series 3 land rover and I'm considering a 4BT conversion but I can't seem to find much info on the engine. Weight, physical size etc. Also where I can find one with the proper governor setup so I don't have to rebuild everything. Someone told me a fedex truck or frito truck. Any ideas????

Cummins web site has spec sheets on the ISB4, the size and weight haven't changed much. The 4BT is still available as an ag/industrial engine so you might be able to dig up specs for it there too. Bread trucks/step van type vehicles are the best place to find them. TDR has a good engine swap forum, you might want to read through that.

The "A" just means it's intercooled. If you can get the original intercooler that came with the engine you've got a 50/50 chance it will fit where it needs to go. I wouldn't go to any extra lengths to find a 4BTA, you can add an intercooler to any 4BT.

I understand some 4BTs had a special balancing package. Anyone know what this is and how to identify a engine with this option. And how well does it work.

My as yet unstarted pet project is a 4BT W150 or Ramcharger.

When I was talking to the Cummins Tech guy, he told me that "A" does indicate aftercooled. However, he did say that most of the 4bta's used a water-to-air aftercooler in the intake manifold instead of an charge-air aftercooler like the ones found in our Rams. It doesn't matter what kind of aftercooler it has... they both are designated by an "A".

FWIW... he also told me that the water-to-air aftercoolers were capable of bringing the intake air down to around 250° and the charge-air coolers are capable of getting the air down to about 200°.

For just the engine? I'd say that unless it's fairly new, low miles and superbly clean, that's a bit on the high side.

Have you thought about or looked into adding an aftercooler to your 4bt? The water-air aftercooler (while not as effecient as the charge-air aftercooler) might be the best bet if space in front of the radiator is at a premium. By adding the aftercooler, you should be able to play around with hopping up the pump and/or different injectors and still keep your EGT's under control.
