Question 3rd vs 2nd Gen. Engines

First off, I sorry if this is has been asked before, but I'm still new to this and as you learn, more questions come up.

My buddy just bought an '03 3500 and boy is it quiet. What is the big difference between the 24 valve 2nd Gen and the new 3rd Gen.?

Is it or would it be possible to do mods. to get the 2nd to run as quiet? (not saying I want mine to be quiet.)

Basically has to do with the common rail fuel injection system on the newer engines that quiets them down. Do a search on this forum about it and you will find lots. Also, check out www.cummins.com.

Arent diesels supposed to be heard?

loud 3rd. gen

I have straight piped and stacked my '03 and I have been told that it is louder than my '01. There is additional work on the bottom end to make it quieter( a bedplate? and additional sculpting of the block walls on the bottom end).

Didn't dodge also redesign the cabin to make it quieter on the 03's and 04's? If not, I need to go punch my salesman...

After having gotten into the interiors of my 2003 and my 2001 I would say the '01 has more sound insulation. That would make sense since the engine is quieter and if Dodge doesn't have to add more insulation due to the quieter engine they certainly aren't going to waste their money on it.

Thats so true Vaughn Kind of like how you could get those "lazy boy" comfortable bucket seats in the 91-93's cause they rode like lumber wagons!

OUCH !!!
I resemble that remark. What do you mean they rode like lumber wagons - just in case you haven't noticed there are still many first gen trucks on the road and they still ride like lumber wagons-but they just happen to be the best lumber wagons on the road.

They use pilot injection on the 3rd gens. A short initial squirt of fuel to start the fire and lesson the first blast of detonation and then squirt the rest of the fuel in instead of all of it at once.

Here's the actual reason:

The pilot injection on the newer engines eliminates the big "SLAM" of cylinder pressure that the second-gen engines have. This is because instead of one big injection event, the fuel injection is spread out more over time (more than one event), reducing peak cylinder pressures. Common sense tells you that this will also make the engine more durable (less fatiguing of internal components).

As for making a second gen quiet, ATP makes a bunch of blankets and stuff that will make your rattler quiet like the new ones. But these are just sound deadeners-- the 3rd gens actually don't have the sound to begin with.
