3.55 vs 3.54 Rear End

Just curious...Is there or was there ever a 3.54 rear end?

The "Build Sheet", from Dodge, for my truck says 3.55 rear axle. Always assumed the two were the same?

Actually I think you might be right. If this sounds right.I have read r&p ratios need to be a uneven number so the gears wont develop a wear pattern. if it is uneven the gears will never hit in the same spot all the time, such as 4.11s 2.73s 3.55s. anyone wanna chime in here? is this true?

If I am right, the rears are 3.55 and the fronts are 3.54 so that the fronts will turn slightly faster to help with steering in poor traction situations.

Similarly, a truck with 4.11 rear would have a 4.10 front.

My window sticker says one thing, build sticker in the glove box says the other.

3.55 and 3.54 (can't remember which says which).

I've heard the rear is "3.55 and front is 3.54" thing before as well.

i don't think that is true... that will start loading up the drivetrain when driving straight too... [even in dirt...] 0.01 doesn't sound like much, but it makes a difference i think

I believe the ratio is correct 3:55 rear / 3:54 front. again to keep a little more load on the front. That is why they don't want you to keep it in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement.

Really hadn't thought much about it till I read this post but, if you want the true ring and pinion ratio you will have to count the number of teeth on the pinion gear and divide into the number of teeth on the ring gear to get it. Being different size housings they probably have a different tooth count front to rear? So they would have to get as close (numerically) as possible with different numbers?..........WV Smoker........

Back in the days when the Cryco 8.75 rear was a 3:55 and the Dana 60 rear was a 3:54 but that was then and this is now.
