3.0L Jeep diesel
3.0L Jeep diesel
yeh i know this is a cummins form, but my father is going to give me his cummins and he is looking at a 3.0L jeep diesel. anyone herd good things about the jeep diesel?
The 3.0l is 100 percent Mercedes. It has been around for many years in many different configurations. It is the same basic engine that is used in the sprinter van and the gl series MB.The access to work on it sucks but that is getting to be standard way of doing things. It has a VGT turbo that is durable.

I bought one for my wife, it is a Mercedes 3.0 V-6 diesel and I have owned it since May. It has about 7K miles on it and I have installed a K&N drop in filter, MBRP exhaust and a pressure box as well. I am happy with it and much like the Dodges with a Cummins I anticipate the body and interior to be far outlived by the drivetrain. Good get up and go after the mods but still kind of wimpy from the weight of the 4x4 on hers.
I believe the Jeep Liberty engine is built by VM Motori ... the general (GM) bought 50% stake in VM Motori so it could use their diesel engines in Europe.

the with the VM Motori 4cyl early liberty's had problems and were killing trans and torque converters so to fix it they derated the engine as for the new ones i have no idea i know the 3.0 is a MB engine straight out of the sprinter vans
My apologies to bob4x4 for questioning the MB.
And thanx to DevilzTower for posting the REAL name I was trying to think of.

The 3.0 is a Mercedes, if you are talking the 2.8 then I dont know, but I believe that is an Italian design. I have never owned a 2.8 but from what I read the customers had a lot of problems and I think they discontinued the 2.8 diesels in the Liberty.
The 3.0 is the diesel is in the Grand Cherokees only from what I understand, they may have a diesel sedan avaialable with that motor or at least there was some talk about it. The truck is a new 08. I am not sure if they stopped the availability of the diesels for the 2009's, I do know they were not selling well for Jeep when diesel was $4.00 plus a gallon. Not too sure they are selling well now either.

yes, the 2009 liberty diesels are hot off the lots. I cannot get one here in new york state because the idiots in new york city pulled the legislators' noses, as such any diesel car is banned. wanted a VW beetle deisel in 2001-banned. sheesh....we have more cows than people where I live, they do not mind-really!
dodge did a heckuva good job with the mechanics and design! wow...

Jeep pulled the 2.8 because of the new diesel emission laws. They sold almost double the diesel Liberties they had originally planned on selling. The 5 speed Dodge tranny was a poor match for the 2.8 but with a egr delete and a few other changes the Liberties will get low 30s on mileage. I would love to have a 2.8 in my 91 Wrangler in place of the 4.0. But I would prefer a 47RE behind it or a 6 speed manual. The 2.8 has been used for years in Europe and Australia in Jeeps and Chrysler mini-vans as well as tractors. It's a good engine. The earlier Mercedes had a 3.0 liter I6 engine which followed the I5 engine. The newer ones have a V6 3.0 diesel.
Detroit Diesel (which was bought buy DaimlerChrysler and now jointly owned between the two since the split) owns 49% of VM Motori. GAZ owns 51%.
I test drove the Grand Cherokee with the 3.0L diesel before my wife and I got the Jetta TDI. At the time thier were no deals on the Jeep and the diesel was only available on the Limited. At that time a new 2500 Mega Cab 4X4 diesel was cheaper.
Several Mercedes SUV's use the same 3.0L diesel.
