2008 Ford SD
I saw a 08 ford sd with the 6.4L in it today in a parking lot. The exhaust pipe had soot in it, I thought these new trucks were suppose to have no soot in the tail pipe. I know the 6.7L cummins has a clean pipe with no black in it.

check the ford website (the diesel stop) alot of those guys are having problems with the new 6.4 smoking and going into regen more often than it is supposed too. guess the ford service writer is still going to be busy thanks to the 6.4

....The new 6.4 is smoking, yes. It is said to be a problem with the DPF just cracking and allowing flow of soot. no big deal.
Going into regen more often than supposed to? Ford says these trucks will regen once per full tank of fuel, and perhaps more often if driving in the city. Mine regens about twice per tank in the city and once per tank or two on the highway.
The ford service writers arent too busy with the 6.4l, however the dodge service writers arent busy either because they just leave each 6.7l sitting for a couple weeks waiting for a new DPF to come in to get fixed.

maybe your truck is regenning correctly but you cant speak for the whole fleet. My buddy has an 08, beautiful truck, i really liked it and considered getting one til i saw the mileage he was getting, and truthfully it really didnt pull any better then the 06 that he had. But anyways, his regens pretty much everytime he drives it.
We were talking about mileage after i got my truck and he said that is why he thinks he is getting so bad of mileage, he thinks its stuck in regen lol. Anyways, he has over 10k miles and only averages 8.9mpg, and quite a bit of that is highway. at just over 1k miles on my truck im averaging about 16.5mpg.
Other then that it is a gorgeous truck. Its black, sitting on 35s, with some sweet 20" wheels and a nice grill guard with lights and what not.

Good to hear his isnt in the shop. most 6.7ls are in the shop before they start smoking. Personally, if its smoking the DPF isnt clogged up so i dont mind seeing my truck smoke.
lgp9999 these trucks have a Diesel Particulate Filter on them (DPF) which collects all soot in the exhaust system. This is why the new trucks do not smoke. Regeneration (regen for short) is the process in which the exhaust is heated up via some special injection and it burns out the particles in the filter. It takes 10-30 minutes depending on conditions. The ford will do it at idle which makes it great for a city driven truck.
My mileage in the city is pretty bad, 12-13 but on the highway this weekend i was doing 17-19 depending on speed. i was really impressed because last time i did the trip with 4000 less miles on the truck it got about 15

I have seen numerous 6.4 powerjokes smoking substantially at take off. One was today as a matter of fact. I don't see these particulate filters doing anything besides lining the wallet of the patent holder who has his hand in the back pocket of whatever EPA offical made these pieces of junk mandatory. Yeah, these new emissions are for "the health of the environment". I guess reducing the fuel economy of a vehicle by half or more is also great for the environment. Especially when they turn around and say they want to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel. If the EPA doesn't want that to sound like the biggest contradiction in history we better see biodiesel stations all over America QUICK.
Rant over.........................for now.
