12v vs 24v engine noise

They sound pretty much the same but the 24v seems to be a bit louder at idle. Am I correct? If so, what makes it louder? More valves, injectors?

Some guy that claims to be a Cummins mechanic says the 12v is louder....I disagree. Every (stock) 12v I have heard seems a bit quieter than the 24v....

Talking

The 24 valvers need the extra 12 valves to KEEP UP with the old 12 valvers!!!

More parts means more noise!!!

What 24 valve are you talking about, the 98.5 to 2002 ISB or the 2003-2007 ISBe?

The VP44 equipped 24 valves are loud, mine is loud at idle, loud at cruise, pretty much loud all the time. Mine has a real loud intake noise to it too. Don't know the cause and can't pin it down. Makes more noise than 2 our our 12 valves.

The '03 and up ISBe is quiet compared to everything else at home.

I'm gonna have to say the injection pump. I know mine quiets down pretty good at idle compared to the HRVP44 that was on it. But that HRVP was louder than the stocker too.

Since my hearing is about shot I have to go by feel. My 24 v even feels loud. haha

My son's neighbor (also a streetrodder) tosses a black plastic bag out by the curb when I come by. Guess I should just put my leather gloves on and hop out and toss in the back. Some day I'm going to pick up his garbage can run off with it.

from what i have heard i think the 24v is the loudest. especially compared to a CR. after i got my 24v i was at work and a driver came into the truck yard driving a CR and i couldnt even hear it. darn truck could have been electric with cummins badges for all i know.

not like my 24v that can be heard, this was verified, from a mile away.

the other day we had some severe weather and i had to go to the Emergency Operations Center, for the local Skywarn group. the EOC is housed in a Fire Station. earlier the Firefighters had stopped by the station in the Fire Truck. when i got there in my truck the other operators in the EOC said when i pulled in they thought it was the FF's in the truck coming back.

the 98.5-02 isb 24 valves are louder because the injecton pressere i a lot higher than a 12 valve the diesel noise (rattle) is a combination of detionation and the noise created when the injector fires the new trucks cr,d-max and the power choke have electronis selonoid injectors and they fire multiple times to get all of the fuel into the cyl where a mechenical injector only fires 1 time and blows it all in at onese hence the noise

Thats funny, I perceive my 12V ( and any others I have ever heard ) as louder than the 24V. I can tell all 4 generations apart coming down the road, and to me, in order of loudness 1.) 94-98 12V 2.) 89-93 12V 3.) 98.5-02 24V and finally, the gasser of the bunch, the CR years.

Could be since my hearing is gone in the higher pitches, that is the reason I think this.

Nope, just the "regular" 24v not the Common Rail. I know my 03 is a lot quieter than the older trucks, but it seems that the newest trucks like the 06's+ are even more quiet. Guess it's that 3rd injection event!

Most of the responses back up what I stated to the guy in question. It isn't a major issue, but it's not fully accurate.

I heard a new Dmax LMM, sounded like a gasser with a push rod on its way out.

I think the 2nd Gen 24v's are the loudest, while the 2nd gen 12v, 1st Gen 12v, and then the CR's.

Cool

The Cummins Inline 6's "clatter" is one of the main reasons I LOVE them. The "noise" factor is the same thing why everyone LOVES Harleys.

Now for the life of me, I have NO idea in the world why anyone would LOVE a Power Choke's or Durasmax (or any other) V8 diesel NOISE!!! This is even taking into account the horrible sounds that get emitted out the tailpipe either!

There just ain't something right about V8 diesel engines IMHO.

They sound better than the 6.2's and 6.5's though.
