My 24 valve will knock out 20-22 mpg all day at 470 +hp. The VP is the only downside but I have yet to have one fail or strand me as I changed my factory one out before piercing the wire and before it failed on it's own. It had 154,000 miles on it when I changed it . I like the ability to make high numbers on the dyno and then adjust the box back down for daily driving and towing without smoking everyone out . I changed my lift pump out miles ago for an Air Dog system and have never looked back. My goal is to see how much hp I can attain and still use the truck as a truck. The 53 block is a concern but there are 12 valve 53 blocks out there also.

I really am not biased towards either motor. Most of my friends are running 12v's with my budy and me being the exception. He has 171,000 and I have 156,000 and I love the thing to death. I also cannot say anything bad about my other buddies 12v's. They are all smooth running units. My best advice to you is to drive both and see what you preffer. that is the only way you will be sure that you are happy. Just sit back and take in the info and use it. You must be careful though because many people you talk to are going to be biased towards one motor or the other. Take most info with a grain of salt and the rest soak in. You can usually tell who is bullsh*ttin ya. Have fun and enjoy whatever you decide to purchase. Happy motoring and oh yeah I have a 99 xtended cab dually and I get 17 mile to the gallon so I am not complaining.

for a do-it-youselfer u cant beat a 12 valve....anything can be done urself including timing...parts are fairly easy to find at junkyards and fuel is easy to manipulate......i do however like how the 24 valves rattle better/louder...what would it take to rattle like that

Someone said this was the "holy grail"
Just wanted to let everyone know that I found a 98 Quad cab 12v 4x4 Cummins short box SLT Laramie. It has about 163k mi on it and is for $18000 CAD, or about $14500 USD.
Is that worth buying?
