Filled up with red fuel in VA

So I was on a trip to Staunton VA from Raleigh last week and I stopped in Martinsville for some fuel. I don't remember the name of the place, but it had fuel for 2.84 so I decided to stop. So I'm standing there, filling up, not paying attention to anything. I'm just kind of staring at the clouds waiting for the pump to finish.

So when the pump stops, I always put some more fuel in there just to top it off. Much to my dismay, when I looked down to check the nozzle, I noticed that the fuel was red!!! I about had a heart attack, and nothing on the pump indicated it was red fuel.

I went in and told the lady at the counter what happened, and she told me that since VA was in a fuel shortage, the state allowed them to have people pump red fuel since it was all that they had left. They gave me a paper showing all of the information about the situation and sent me on my way. I still paid taxes on it, but for a minute there, I was a bit nervous.

Soooooooooo, if you're in VA and you fill up with red fuel on a regular pump, now you know why

Did you pay the taxes when you bought it or do you have to file later? I wonder if the station is really sending in the tax money.

The letter was from the IRS. I paid taxes on the fuel when I filled up. I'm not sure how it's working, but it's interesting that this happened. There were multiple stations in that area using red fuel only.

As long as you keep the reciept, showing what you paid per gallon, you should be fine.

I personally would keep the reciept in the truck for at least 5 fill ups, for sure getting all the dye out.
I'd also jot down the OD mileage at the time of fillup, just in case, along with reciepts for each consecutive fillup, with mileage jotted down on them as well.

Call me paranoid, but having never been dipped for dye, I'd get dipped for sure after filling up with red legally.

I did that once in Pa a few years back. The off road nozzle was on one side of the pump and the on road nozzle was on the other. The off road sticker was very small and I did not see it when I grabbed the nozzle. Doing the same thing, looking at the sky, etc, I commenced fill up. About ten gallons into the fill up I noticed the sticker. Thought I was going to have to call the rescue squad. Explained to the manager and he gave me a special receipt and I gave them a severe verbal bashing about the signs on their pumps. I was nervous for about six months until I figured it was all gone.

If it makes you feel better you can still get red at the pump in SC also. I filled up the other day at a BP and the diesel was the color of pepto bismo! I asked the owner about it and he didnt even know that there was a difference between on and off road diesel and the fact that we can get fined. Nice guy and insisted that the fuel came off the truck the day before. I wouldnt sweat it at all. Just keep the receipt as others are saying.

I've only heard about people getting dipped on the east coast, and not very often. How many of you or how many true cases do you know of that people have actually been checked in their CTD. I've never heard of it happening here or in AK.
I've been thinking about running red

SD is a farming community, better chances of it happening. Still if you stay away from live stock auctions your chances would be slim, about the time I tryed it my middle name would become slim.

I just don't get it. What happened to probable cause? How can they just dip your tank without consent or probable cause?

What is this Canada? (The following was a joke)

Red fuel is for off road use only. It is not taxed as much as
"road fuel". If you are caught "dipped" you can face a heavy fine and they take away your birthday.
