N.C. truckers combat high diesel cost
Thursday, March 06, 2008
The Charlotte Observer --
Harold E. Funderburk has noticed more and more big rigs parked on the side of the road with "For sale" signs in their windows.
"They are just giving it up, selling their stuff and going to work for some big (trucking) company" the Raleigh trucker said.
The high price of regular gasoline usually gets all the attention, but the price of diesel has been steadily climbing. On Tuesday, a gallon of diesel was $3.60 in the Triangle, while nationally it hit a record $3.68 a gallon.
If prices keep climbing, Funderburk said, he'll park his semi, too.

i put 40 bucks in yesterday and it gave me 1/4 tank diesel here in toronto ont its $1.15 a litre or $4.60 a gallion i take my time going to work now no more blowing smoke at people lol. i not sure bout u guys in US but here in the summer they said diesel will go to $1.30 to $1.50 a litre
I pay $4.00 a gallon this mourning, its unreal. I wish it would warm up allready so i could take the harley to work. Untill then i think the new yorker is gettin yanked out of the snow bank its in and used for a little while.
At this point, I'm paying as much in fuel driving my truck as my brother in law is driving his 1/2 ton gasser. He gets 14, and I get 17, so it's a wash when diesel is costing what it costs now.
On the other hand, I'm still paying less than my friend with his 6 liter Chevy 3/4 ton gasser. He only gets 10 or so.

OPEC is saying there is plenty of crude. Just makes me wonder who to really believe.

We're getting raped with the cost of diesel right now. I can't believe how out of hand this has gotten.
I would really really love to know how they determine the price of fuels. I know it doesn't have a **** thing to do with supply. Personally I am sick and tired of the way things are headed. I'm ready to make my own Bio and say goodbye to the pump, or at least not see it every day anymore.
Next week I am going to drive one of my gasser trucks to see if its any cheaper. Save the dually for towing and long hauls.

Yeah lots of owner operators hanging it up. Freight has been really slow for a year now. Too many trucks chasing too little freight equals rates down in the toilet. Add the cost of fuel in there... Not a good mix when you're buying on average 100-200 gallons of diesel a day. Which puts some of the comments in fuel threads here in perspective where guys are complaining about plunking $100 a week for fillups. Yeah that's pretty bad but some people are feeling way more pain than you...
Low dollar due to financial shenanigans like sub prime lending, and vast deficit spending by the Congress and the Bush Administration, political instability and turmoil in the Middle East, not to mention a little old war we started right smack in the middle of an oil exporter, increased demand from our global competitors, rampant speculation, lack of refinery capacity, mainly due to poor planning and energy management policies (Congress, DOE, et al), not to mention the NIMBY effect.
Have I left anything out? Probably.

US refineries process crude using catalytic cracking...this nets:
- 50% gasoline
- 15% diesel
Growing US diesel demand puts a strain on the supply, so the cost goes up.
The rest of the world processes crude using hydrocracking...this nets:
- 25% gasoline
- 25% diesel
Most of the world makes too much gasoline, and the vehicle fleet is increasingly diesel-heavy. So gasoline gets sent to the US, lowering the price we pay for it compared to diesel.
(Totals above don't equal 100% because the remainder gets tuned into various other products)
Well...ummm...it is supply and demand. And a weak dollar.
