If you soak ashes in water, lye will leach out of the ash into the water. That's how folks used to get lye for making soap . . . you need to catch up on your re-runs of the Beverly Hillbillys

I'll see if I can find some reruns on cable

so then how do you get the lye out of the water? can you just boil the water off?

Just go to Google (or your favorite search engine) and type in "making lye". You'll get just about all you need to know. Wonderful thing, the information superhighway.

Hadn't heard about bio-diesel transport requiring a haz-mat placard, but if you keep it under 100 gallons, you should be safe anyway.

Now were you talking about Vodka and cigarettes or makin bio?
Or maybe rot-gut shine.

All of the above.

Theoretically you can steep the ashes, then boil the water off, and have a useable mix of potassium and sodium lye. I think that the fuel costs for all that distillation (I guess wood in this case) would get pretty high. I don't know what kind of yield you would get. "Journey to forever" has a little blurb about it in their biodiesel section.

It sounds as though Jim is volunteeing to set up a travelling still in the back of his truck -- from cornfield to cornfield, eh? A grinder/press, still, and biodiesel reactor -- you could distill ethanol from the corn, use that to make the biodiesel and have some left over for "liver tonic" . . .

The new reason for the price hike is that they shut down all of the refineries in the golf coast because of the huricane. but the darned thing is'nt suppose to hit till tomorrow morning sometime. jumping the gun a little arent they.
