3.9L into a '99 dakota

I just bought a 3.9 liter cummins out of a Case 588G fork truck. I am wanting to put this into a '99 Dodge Dakota, any suggestions on transmission, and gearing to use would be helpful. This engine doen't have a turbo and i want to put one on it. Any sugggestions on turbos would also be helpful.

I'd say check out 4btswaps.com. Lots of guys over there, a couple that have swapped them in Durangos. I know one guy wound up using an NV4500 in it, not sure what he did for t-case though.

Probably looking at modifying or replacing the injection pump on that. They had different types and tunes for injection pumps based on application and turbo/non-turbo.

4btswaps.com is a great place to start, or the 4BT user group on yahoo.

I would use definitely instead of probably. Those CAV pumps don't throw alot of fuel even when turned up.

I've been helping a friend of mine out with the same kind of setup, non-turbo to turbo. Had the pump turned all the way up and wasn't enough fuel. He picked up a VE and I went through it for him, 3200 rpm gov spring, plus other tweaks. Night and day difference.
CAV to VE pump swaps are easy, the pump gear has to be rotated to a different letter on the gear. As long as you get all the plumbing its a piece of cake.

Half way point.

I have the engine in the truck and I am waiting for the inline pump to come back from Scheid diesel. Once I get it on I can test fire it. I put a NV4500 and a t-case that I salvaged from a wrecked '97 2500 ram.

Durango Builds

The links below are to 4BT Dodge Durango builds. Yours being a 1999, should be a little easier without the rack & pinion steering.

I am a new guy. The conversion I want to do is to put a 4 bt into my 1994 Dodge 1500. I am a jr. geezer or greybeard and want to maintain the auto tranny. The truck has a 360 gas engine. I appreciate the threads and will look at both 4btswaps and the yahoo site. I understand motor mounts need to be made and the 46rh may need to be beefed up to hande the conversion. Would anyone know if this sounds right? Another thing I will need to find a service shop that does good work. Is anyone familiar with Antrim Diesel in Greencastle, Pa? I would like someone in Va as that is where we live. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

I'll be interested to see how you work out the front differential "problem". On those trucks with the independent front suspension the differential mounts on the engine!

As far as gearing goes, mine was geared way too high for the gas V6 that was in it so maybe the gearing won't be too far off for the Cummins. Get it going and see what you think. There are also heavier duty rear ends available for them, so if you change the gearing you might just change the whole diff instead and get a tougher setup to run behind the diesel.

I looked until I found a 4X2 durango, bought it on E-bay. It needs top ball joints and a little TLC but good other wise.

My dakota is in its testing stages now, I drove it around in the field yesterday with only the drivers seat in it and just the down pipe. It has some power.

I put a HX25 holset on it which I found out was a stock turbo for the 3.9 engines that are factory turbocharged. I will probaly go bigger.
