Last Night At The Track

Met the guys from Hot Rod Diesels at Houston Raceway Park last night, they were doing some test/tune runs on a couple of trucks. I decided to make a couple passes with the daily driver stack I have been running for the last month or so. This stack has improved my daily driving mpg by 2+ city and highway. All city 15+mpg and all highway at 75+mph 19-20mpg.

TST R49 05tt 3/0, EZ 1 and Smarty #6.
12-14psi 4wd launch.

1.93 60'
8.43 1/8@83.3mph
13.22 1/4@102.5mph

TST R49 05tt 4/0, EZ 1 and Smarty #6
14-15psi 4wd launch.

1.93 60'
8.37 1/8@84.1mph
13.13 1/4@102.3mph

On both runs my BD BOV was bleeding off boost at shift points, I gotta get a cutoff switch on that thing for the track. Would have been a little better without pssst, pssst all the way down the track. However I am very happy with the times. I now know why a lot of the sports cars that try to pass me can't quite do it .

Best times so far, excluding the 12.47s ET that is still not believable by some and surely a lucky launch at best, are in the 12.7s range.

For the 12.7s I ran with TST R49 03tt, Timing at 15* Auto, 2/0 or 3/0, EZ on 3, and Smarty #8. Need 20-25psi 4wd launch to get into 12.7 range at 106mph. This is a pretty radical stack on my mods, injector rattle and lot of smoke, but once the SPS66 lites it pulls hard all the way. Anything higher than 3/0 on the TST and either drain rail or get bad popping.

Our trucks are pretty much side-by-side down the track.

My truck with 12.65-12.75 runs are crazy larry, tst on 7x2(I have tried NUMEROUS different settings and it pretty much doesn't make ANY difference at all), mp-8 on 50%. With a 20-25psi launch.

The crazy thing is without the tst in the mix at all the truck still runs 12.8 with only the crazy larry and the mp on 50%. A guy would think he could gain more than that with the tst. I have tried alot of different settings too. 1x1, 2x2, 2x1, ect...

The 12.62 run was 7x2. The setting on the tst just depends on what mood I'm in. LOL.

I think the floor it cp3 mod and fluxs will help alot. I really like the numbers out of lmills trucks with a downloader/pressure box/injectors. I am going that route to keep the timing in check... I might even try a bottle. It's cheaper than twins!

Luken,

I agree we seem to have hit about the same wall for now. I really want to finish what I planned from the beginning. That was before the $$$ dried up quickly. I have tried a number of other combos including BDTD w/CL and they all seem to bottom out about the same place. I need cam, springs, modded cp3 and injectors I know to go lower consistenly and safely. Then I will certainly consider the blue bottle. But for now I will just have to be satisified with where I am at. Considering that I don't have any of those mods I am happy with my times.

Wow, your putting up some pretty good times. I have to try my daily drive to see I can pull a 12sec pass. How much wheel spin you get on the launch? I slid for 3 to 4ft, at 25psi of boost. I think that a lower boost # at launch would cut my 60ft time. I have to find a evening to just try the track out.

My original goal was to get into the 13s. Then when that happened I decided that the low 13s was all I wanted . Ok now I have made it into the 12s with the same mods I wanted low 13s with. The next level is big $$$s for me and that just won't happen for a while . But I am still happy .

I haven't had time to take her to the track. I've tried a few boost launch, the hardest pull was my first 25psi on the new tranny. I've tried a 10psi launch, there was no wheel spin. It seemed to take more time to bring her up to full boost. Hopely next year I can find some time to see how she runs down the quarter.

are you launching in 4 wheel drive? what kind of tires are you running? I dont think you should slide that much when you are launching; maybe the track isn't sticky enough?

Well with your mods and a little lighter truck a lot will depend on what tires you are running. They best launch psi is as high as you can go without spinning a tire or nuking something. With the 315s I did not have to worry about spinnig all 4 on launch. With the 285s at 25psi I have spun all 4 and started an ugly wheel hop all over the track. With the lift kit gone and smaller tires my weight is around 7225-7250lbs at the track with me in it. This is about 250lbs lighter and changes all my rules at launch. I am still trying to find that perfect launch psi, it seems to be a moving target.

Are you running when the track is prepped? I know that at IRP for tuesday night street legals they don't prep the track, and anyone who has any kind of power spins like crazy even on slicks. My buddy purposely bought a set of slicks for his mustang for that reason and no matter what psi he went to he couldn't get it to grab like they should have.
