How do you win a pulling competition?

I was reading some of these pulling post and got to wondering what's the goal in a pulling competition? I assume you're trying to pull the largest load the farthest. Am I right? And if you do a "full pull", do they add more weight and you go again? What happens if you tie with another dude? Pull-off?

Pulling competitions have different classes like street diesel, modified, run what you brung, etc. Each class will be pulling a set amount of weight. Anytime a full pull is achieved....you are in the "pull off". They add more weight to the sled for the pull off & then it comes down to the farthest pull wins.

I see. So if you do a full pull in the qualifying rounds, you automatically move on? What if nobody/everybody makes a full pull? Is there a cap on how many move on to the next round?

PtGarcia,
The main objective is to pull the sled the farthest.. The distance is measured.
If more than one truck gets a "full pull" then usually there will be a "pull off" at which time more weight or gearing is changed on the sled to make things more difficult. The one that pulls the farthest that time is the winner.

If no one reaches a full pull then the truck that pulled farthest is winner.
Some pulling competitions have what they call a "floating finish" in which the full pull is just a name sake and doesnt really count. Floating finish means who ever can pull the farthest no matter how far is the winner.

You need to go out and try it once or twice...

The Tulare truck pulls this year was nothing but floating finishes...I believe that was the toughest track I had ever seen...NOBODY got a full pull and I believe the farthest pull was a Fummins...235-245 feet...it was crazy.

it depends on the track and sled setup if anyone achieves a full pull or near it---sometimes also what's at the end of the track may make it wise for the sled to be set up heavier and for the pan to drop earlier to keep things safe----chris

The goal is to pull the sled the furtherest to win, the trick is putting every ounce of horsepower you have to the ground!
