drag race questions

Well i'm going to the track and need some advice. I have raced plenty before just never a diesel. So, should I deep stage or just go regular? The truck is a auto so, run it in tow haul or regular mode. And how much boost at launch?
I also figured i'd run it in 4x4 so it wouldn't burn the tires off the line.
Thanks, Jim

First be careful with stock tc/transmission and flexplate. I run in 4hi all the way in normal OD mode, only take it out of 4wd after slowing down to turn off the track.

The only way to get a decent launch and 60' time is with power brake to build some boost. How much depends on what tc/trans mods. If stock I would not launch over 6-8psi and that can be hard on it.

I straighten up, shift to 4hi, roll to pre-stage light. Power brake until boost starts building to where I want. Then bump to full stage trying to keep the boost steady or creeping up just a little. Then at the light, left foot up and right foot down.

I say 4wd, 8-10lbs of boost, stage normal and leave on the 3rd bulb.

cool thanks!! Trans is all stock. On the '06 tow haul locks the converter much sooner so that's why I asked about that. Will be getting shift kit soon. By the way, the stock flex plate's are not good? Jim

Being able to lock the TC on command is a must for racing, but that does require all of the TC/Transmission and Flexplate upgrades to be safe. Once you starting adding any additional hp and torque it is easy to nuke stock pieces.

These are pictures of my one piece stock flexplate.

Where in NJ are you? And where and when are you thinking about running? If you are going to a place that lets you make as many passes as you want on a friday evening or something like that, try tow haul, try regular mode see what it does, but a boosted 4x4 launch will yield your best times. Be gentle with it you want it broke in, not broken.

I was doing 8-10psi launches with my old beast, it was so much fun I might have to build myself a transmission with billet shafts now.

With staging go with what you are normally comfortable with. If you prefer Deep it will change your 60ft so you have a little trouble judging a good 60ft or not. If you have a pretty good reaction time normally then try the third bulb.

You can get by without a lockup switch for now. The numbers in my sig are without a lockup switch. I'd put it in tow haul and it would lockup around 50mph at WOT(I think). Be careful with that stock trans...

Funny?? That sure looks like a 2 piece flex plate to me!

Did you get the custom detachable input shaft option with that or did you get lucky?

Rick

Got lucky, couple scratches here and there, but no real damage. Actually Michael at HotRodDiesels was doing some diagnostics with DRBIII to check if relief valve was popped or if cp3 was having issues. We knew the flexplate was on borrowed time. He made two runs with TST 5/x & 6/x without any issues. Then loaded Smarty SW 9. It never made the shift to OD. So technically I have never broken anything myself.

Also got lucky he had shown me a Sun Coast Laminated Flexplate he had ordered for a customer for install a few weeks later when I dropped the truck off. He worked Sunday evening and I was back on the road Monday with a flexplate that I can play at the track some more.

Thanks again for everyone's input. Just wanted to let ya know I made it down. It was a great day. Got 4 passes, 14.7 was the best. My buddy's 04 on 37'' tires and 6 speed got mid 15's. Not too bad for 3.73's.
