4WD Launch?
Smokin' Thunder in my sig with either set of injectors, do you think it will be ok to launch in 4WD. we have billet input and output shafts. i was just wondering if it is ok on the rest of the drive train like mainly the front axle. Just wonder for once we get the new BIGGER Injectors. also what do ya'll think will be our ET with the new injectors if we get a good launch.

More than likely, nothing will break.
Really won't help you unless you're getting major rear wheel spin on launch.
Many will tell you to shift out of 4x4 about halfway down the track, this accomplishes nothing,
as it doesn't actually shift out till you let off the skinny pedal and un bind everything.

I shave about a full second off my 1/4 mile time by launching in 4WD.......it is simply impossible to hook the rear up to get any chance of a half decent launch in 2WD on my 94 - I just have to roll out way too slow........and I don't bother shifting into 2WD until I am leaving the shutdown area.

I couldn't even begin to launch in 2wd due to tire spin but pull 1.66 60 foots in 4X4. I also shift out once I'm well into 2nd gear or 3rd. I don't believe the adage about it not engaging as my truck will break the rear tires back loose if you shift out of 4X4 to early as will RottinRhondas truck. The 99 and older trucks have a different 4X4 system than the newer trucks.

What is different about the 4WD systems? The only difference I know of is that the 02's ditched the CAD but everything else is the same.......All CTD 2nd gens other than the 02's have D60 with the vacuum operated CAD and a manually shifted NP241 transfer case.
I think Phox meant the CAD won't disengage until the power is let off......the transfer case will shift out of 4WD as soon as the lever is pulled.

Lil' THUNDER: RARE Late 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 Red SPORT with 24 Valve motor from factory, 5-spd, 3.55 rears, New Stock lift pump, PDR HX-40, ATS 3 piece exhaust manifold, aFe MEGACANNON, Power Edge Drag Comp and Dual 6" Turnout stacks. Best Hp to date: 372Hp and 747 Ft. Lbs of torque. next to come an SBC clutch and DDII's out of Smokin Thunder.
now that is the rarest truck i have evry seen come from dodge, or it is a later truck that was stolen or wrecked and re registered with a 97 title. my money is on the second guess.

Everything is bound up under large amounts of torque, so it doesn't want to slide back until there is less torque there, when you let off the pedal.
It might get unbound enough during the last shift to actually come out of 4x4.

Hey don't you guys use drag slicks? There are tons of them in Summit and Jegs. If you look around there are some good used ones too. You can even get used 16 X 17 wide ones if you really got the power. Need some trick rims. It's not hard to widen a stock set of rims either. I did a lot of them back in the auto shop days.
If you have an 8 inch wheel you can use a 10in slick and you should be able to launch pretty good with this.

I am no where near interested enough in drag racing my CTD to invest the time and money to make it launch hard in 2WD.......I just went to the track every now and then for some fun on a nice summer night. Rear spring/suspension mods would be required on such a heavy truck with so much torque and a very sticky tire to launch well in 2WD.

Gunracer1,
the truck is actually titled as a 1998 but built in 10-97. they didnt start putting 24-valves in till January 15th of 1998. but it was not a swap either. it came from factory like this. Geuss it was a demo or something.
We had the same thoughts on slicks, we said why pay all that money and spend the time to make tires or something when we only do it 2 times a year. So in other words what you guys are saying is we can make our time a 13.7 instead of a 14.7 by just shifting it into 4WD.
We only did 2 runs with the truck our first times were:
R/T .951
60' 2.441
330 6.374
1/8 9.613
1000 12.41
1/4 14.792
MPH 95.04
Our second run with 200' down the track burning the duallies was:
R/T .725
60' 3.088
330 8.365
1/8 12.054
1000 14.997
1/4 17.424
MPH 93.4

Technically a late 1997 is a 1998 no?
If thats the case then my truck bein a 10 95 is a 1995.. then why do i have a 215 pump? and all the goodies that came with a 1996? Hmmm..... interestin point.. Killer times tho!!

I cannot see these times pulling 13's in the 1/4. It would be nice, bu those trucks would have to topend like mad to acheive 13's.
