International F2554 vs F2574
I am looking at purchasing one of these trucks,power trains identical. I did notice the 2574 has dual power steering boxes, and I do not believe the 2554 does. Thanks for the heads up.
While Im at it, maybe you can shed some light on another subject. Both of these trucks are located about 800 miles away, have 5/4 trannies with "underdrive" and big cam 400hps. I understand the importance of oil testing, but does it really help on a 1 shot deal, or is it used more as a long term marker to check wear levels, etc over the course of many oil changes? I need the truck mainly for offroad use, so I want something built tough, and dont mind spending 10-15k to bring one up to good service.
In my opinion, and please correct me if Im wrong. I am setting a $40,000 budget. I can find one of the late 80's mentioned trucks for the 15-17k range. This unit will also stay primarily in state, so it will not be crossing the country. My first thought is to purchase in the 15-25k range, and have between 15-25k available to invest in the truck, rather than spend 40k on a truck, and find out it needs a clutch, tranny, etc and im then over budget to make it sound.
I also plan to run the truck almost daily pulling my dozers in a 4-5 hour radius.
This will be the first truck I have purchased on my own. I knew the history of my current truck, and didnt need to check it over( it was my dads and I drove it full time) but I will admit Im very green when it comes to purchasing an unknown truck and what to look for other than the obvious leaks, blow by, vibrations, etc. I have some experience shifting a 5 and 4, but not servicing or checking them.
