Big Rigs Talk about other Cummins powered vehicles here. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have to be Cummins, but it will be diesel! :)

Cat 3126 to Cummins 8.3L

I just got a 02 T 300 Kenworth that I am rigging up to be My new mechanics truck. It has a 3126 Cat and even though I have worked on Cat's my whole career,34 years. I have also worked on Cummins and all the rest. For a med. duty engine I really don't like the 3126 so I'm considering swapping a 8.3 Cummins. I Haven't decided whether to go with the 12V with P 7100 type pump or a ISX. And since this should be the last truck I rig up before I retire I have decided to go all "trick my truck" on it. This will be my 9th mechanics truck in 34 years. 3 IH's and the rest Fords. My questions are. What do you think of this swap? And which engine would you use? The mechanical or the electronic? Thanks Bill

Go Mechanical...

I'm just starting a 3126E to ISB 5.9L swap in my 99 FL80...if I could have found a good 8.3L to swap, I would've, but I found a wrecked truck with the 5.9L in there, along with everything else I'll need to swap it into the FL80, so I'm going that route.

I'm figuring with a few tweaks, the 5.9L will out pull the bigger 3126E with ease, and probably get better mileage too.

Grey wolf yes all my trucks are in that size range. The truck I'm using right now is a 89 IH S1954. DT466 and a 7spd. It has just under 1,200,000 miles so it's about done. But as I said before this Kenworth will be the last one I rig up hopefully! So I'm going a little nuts on it. Real fire paint job, Stainless gangster visor, And a bunch of chrome. Full custom inside. I will post some pict's as soon as it comes out of the paint booth. Maybe tomorrow. And I am leaning towards a mechanical 8.3 Probably the biggest reason would be because i can buy a full set of injectors for it for the price of one electronic injector. Signature600 I would consider twins for the 5.9 if for no other reason than to keep the EGT's down. All the med duty trucks i've been around with 5.9's are way underpowered. So you know you are going to tune it up. The 12v dodge in my sig. is going to get a set real soon. With just a super B and a mild fuel increase I can peg the EGT's at will when towing. Thanks bill

When we ran 3126s there was nothing but problems!!! Just converting to Cummins will make your life easier. Like stated above, mechanical!
