air compressor
air compressor
1983 IHC S1900 with a 466 and belt-driven air compressor. Pegged the gauges and the compressor wouldn't kick out. Worked OK for a short time with a new governor, a couple hours and it was pegging the gauges again.
There was a bunch of grey/green goo came out of the air line to the governor when we pulled it. The front of the tank had the drain replaced with a plug. I put a new belt on this morning (pulley's shot, dealer is looking for one) and got the plug out to drain the tank. Got quite a bit out.
Is the compressor likely shot, or is it possible that however long it's been since the tank was drained, that it built up enough to force the stuff to the first possible place to vent it, the governor?
And is it worth it to try to clean one of the governors we have to reuse, or would we be better off just getting another new one?

For $12 I just picked up another new governor today. Going to drain the tank again and blow the line out in the morning when installing it. If the transmission leak doesn't have it out of commission.

Did you check the oil level in the compressor? You may need to drain and flush all the air tanks as well as blow down all the air lines to get the crap out.

That goo is probably just oily residue and crud, similar to what you get on your garage compressor. Drain all you can and let the truck run with the tank drains cracked. If you can get the truck on a slope or blocked up so the tank drains are down hill that will help you get some more of it out. This sounds pretty bad and you may also have this crud all the way to the brakes themselves. If you do, the fix isn't pretty. Somebody is going to spend allot of time and get flat out nasty. I've looked and can't find any additive that might help expedite the cleaning. It doesn't mean there isn't one, I'm just am not familiar with it. In any case, if you're going to be running this truck you better start draining the tanks twice a day until you get things under control.
Never thought about it getting into the rest of the system. It seems to only pull off the primary side so maybe we are lucky there. I know I got about three spades full of gunk out of the secondary side of the tank. And if the trans leak doesn't have it down, I am hoping the new (again) air gov and blowing out the gov line and draining the tank does some good. I only have one more belt (didn't take the part # to NAPA to get a spare belt today-oops) and that won't get me through feeding if it is still not acting right.
The boss has been talking about strapping a gas air compressor to the rear bumper and plumbing it into the truck. He got a truck to town with a blown motor that way one time, might be what happens here for a short while- even though it's a good way to start a fire, with loading ground hay into the truck and all.......

Got the tank drained, blew some brake cleaner back through the hose that runs from the tank to the governor, and it's cutting out back down about 130 PSI and quit burning belts, at least for now.
