5 and 4 tranny
Do all 5 and 4's shift in the same manner? I have never ran one, but all the video's seem to be showing the early to mid 70's trucks. This is a 1987 with one, just wondered if they are the same exact trannies.
Thanks

A 5 and 4 is actually 2 trannies divorced. They call them twin sticks and it is an art to operate them poetically. For the most part they do shift the same.

The 5 speed is your main box and the 4 speed is the Brownie box. If the brownie is all progressive ratio and the 5 speed has a short 5th that is a very, very nice setup. I drove one like that longer ago than I care to think about and it was about as good as any single stick I have driven and that is a lot.
I think there is a difference in shift pattern if its a double overdrive on the secondary??? I just remember using only 3 out of the 4 on the secondary box but the shift pattern was like a double over 15 speed. In the standard 4 speed H positions the shift progression was 1-2-4-3. It was a late 60's Ford I was driving with a 391. Once you get the hang of it, its not that tough.
