How to add 2nd Gen / 3rd Gen Towing mirrors to a 1st Gen CTD

How to add 2nd Gen / 3rd Gen Towing mirrors to a 1st Gen CTD

This is a how to write up from my reference post:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=150798

First I took the new mirrors out of the box and used some cardboard to make a template, which I could then transfer to Metal later.

The mirrors also came with a metal reinforcement plate so I used that to help locate the holes in my template.

Next it was time to start taking the old stuff off and get started.

So I first took out the small wing window, it is held on with 2 screws

I then took the old Mirror off.. There is a screw on the bottom of the chrome plate

Once you get the plate off you can then use a 10mm socket to get the mirror off.

Now back to making the steel plate.

I used the cardboard and transferred the design onto some 1/8” steel plate

the problem that I found was I made the 1st steel plate is was a little to small so I had to cut another piece of steel and remake the steel template

When I held the steel plate up to the window area I found that it was a little curved and so was the mirror plastic, so I used some Steel hammers to bend the steel top the correct shape..

Yes it is nice to have good tools

Once I had the plate shaped I took a air grinder and took the paint off the door so I could weld to clean steel..

Oh and good welding clothes help 

After everything was fitting correct I held the plate in place and welded it to the door..

The last part is to take the old mirror mounts off, and weld the holes up

After everything was welded up I took some Bondo and put it on the edge where the weld is, that is the only part I still have to go back and sand down..

I will get all finished pics later this week or this weekend.

Here is one of the drivers side

Hope this helps others that may be considering taking the plung to get better mirrors for towing.

Well I know a lot of folks will hate me for doing this next mod.. but for me Good mirrors and visibilty when towing is worth it.

so yes I welded on my new style dodge mirrors.

Here is my old 1st Gen with the mirrors on it.. you can see they tilt up some..

so this time I took more time and made a new mount so they sit level, plus we braced then with some bends in steel so they woul dnot shack when driving down highway.. and so far at 70mph no shaking

ok on to the pics:

they are only primer for now but will be painted to match rest of truck once i paint the rest of truck..
