Westerner Day Surprise

As some of you may know, my wife and I raise miniature donkeys. They don't pay the bills but they are more fun than work and they bring a lot of smiles to everyone that comes to the farm. That is what makes it worth it.

Last year, we decided to enter the competition at Westerner Days in Red Deer. For a couple of days practice and showing up for the most part, a little unprepared, we did pretty good. With a small limited entry card, we ribboned in 13 of 17 classes taking 1st and 2nd's in a good portion of those classes. Not bad for a very small breeder competing against some of the biggest breeders in Alberta.

This year, we went again but with more animals, a bigger entry card, helpers to help exhibit the animals but because of both of us working, a little limited on practice.

Competition was a little tougher with a few breeders out of BC and Manitoba in amongst the Alberta regulars. We ribboned in every class we competed in but a little lower than even we expected, but that is how it goes considering the level we are competing at.

For the Breeders Choice part of the competition, you are voted on by the breeders themselves. Our animals qualified for 11 of the competing 14 classes.

We swept the competition! We took 1st place in every category as well as even taking 2nd also in some of the classes.

We are the 2013 NMDA Breeders Choice National Champs for Canada.

Talk about an eye opener! The icing on the cake was getting Best of Breed. It doesn't get any higher than that.

Not bad for a farm that was a mostly unknown breeder last Thursday and now is a force to be watched among the elite of the miniature donkey world!

Sorry for the long winded post but I had to tell someone

While the moment was good, I asked but the wife still won't let me get a new truck.

Jeff

Thanks guys, I know it's not diesel related but I had to tell someone!

We still are a little in shock. Never would have thought it would happen at all let alone so soon.

I guess we are doing something right

Jeff

Awesome Jeff! If you need any cheap help at the farm our two oldest children could use some hard work for the summer, my parents used to send me to my uncles and it made for found memories earning my room and board!

That is awesome Jeff - love to hear about Alberta families doing well. Who cares if it isn't diesel related, you are allowed to celebrate the results of good work. It sound like all of us Alberta chapter folks are happy for your rewards.
