I remember reading about these issues when I was in search of a short shift kit. Kept putting off the purchase until I heard about the newer style. Have had it in the truck for about three years now, no issues yet. (knock on wood).
Glad to hear BD is stepping up to the plate for you.

Hmmm, not good since mine is the "new design" also.

Where exactly did yours break? Any chance you can take a pic of it? I'm all about preventative welding & engineering to avoid this.

When you get the replacement, please compare the 2 closely to see any differences.

Thanks, Joe..

Would it be an issue on the 6 speed kits? The bends in the 5 spd look much more prone to breaking, 6 spd looks to be of a good size diameter and one smooth bend.

FWIW, I've had a short shifter in my truck for just about 3 years with no ill effects. I do like the feel of the stock shifter with a dual disc better though.

Really don't want to take this thing apart again---mine was weeping a bit so one slow afternoon i tore into it,cleaned everything up real good, sealed with some high temp RTV and so far it holding well---also did a service on the 6er too+ put the Quad 4x4 filter kit on.I have the older model as i bought it back when PAAL was around,"it was at the beginning of the bombing bug"DW

Well my NV5600 BD short shift adapter broke off during our vacation.
In the same place, where the threads are undercut.

We had just arrived at Herald Provincial park near Salmon Arm for a week of camping on July 28th.
I had just swung by our site, with the 5th wheel in tow, jammed the tranny into reverse & then I was holding onto the loose stick.

It was close to 40C, I was so freaking mad, but kept my cool so to speak.
It took me a bit to get the truck into reverse gear with 2 pairs of vise grips. Backed up the trailer into our site & downed a few cold beer.

I called BD in Abbotsford & they were excellent. They shipped a replacement part no charge to my folks in Kamloops. Family came out & I installed it a few days later.
I carry a ton of tools when camping including the needed T25 torx bit needed on the NV5600. While I was ticked off it broke, I really got lucky that it broke right there & not at the top of Rogers Pass or some other remote place.

So now to prevent this in the future. I totally don't trust it, I've been shifting like a little old lady since.
I really like the short shifter & can't live with the OEM. Nor do I trust the OEM now either.

1. The stock shifter stub will now be carried in my truck.

2. I'm going to fabricate a piece of pipe or something similar that would fit over the stub & temporarily shift the trans. I'll carry that in the truck also.

3. I'm going to have the stock shaft welded to the short shifter stub right at the threads.
The BD replacement is machined (undercut) as the threads exactly the same as the OEM. This will make servicing the trans a tad more difficult but I can't have this thing break again.

Fyi...

My short shifter has been in the truck for over 3 years.
The replacement looks exactly the same as the broken original part.

Sorry to hear yours broke as well, at least BD was good about it.

Sorry Mike, I haven't welded it up yet. My custom bent stick is at the chrome shop. I will post up pics when before I bolt it back into the truck.

Did you ever weld or somehow reinforce the new BD short shifter stub?

Stealth, Murphy lives well when ever I tow my RV as well. Each time I do a major pull with it, and I don't break something is a good day.
Today, my vaccum pump line jumped of my vaccum pump. At first my cruise didn't work, later in the day, my heater vents stopped working. At that point I knew Murphy as laughing at me, but I won, I found the disconnected hose.

So here is preventative step1 of dealing with this issue ever again.

ShifterSched80Pipe.jpg?t=1251856957

18inches of sched80 pipe, 3/4 inch inside diameter. A little filing & it now fits snugly over the broken stub & the stock shifter stub also.
I gave it a quick coat of black spray paint & stuck a cap over the one end, safely tucked under the rear seat.

It wasn't supposed to look like a pipe bomb!
Anyway, if the stub breaks off again, I can quickly slip this over it & be driving the truck in 2 seconds.

Still working on welding the shift lever to the lower stub, still driving like a little old lady meantime..

..Joe
